Not as great as The Round House, but given that The Round House is one of my absolute favourite books that would have been a miracle.

I kind of had an unexpected epiphany reading this book. I have no connection at all to Native Americans, but LaRose's exploration of boarding school trauma helped me understand relatives who were forced into sporting schools under communism (not that I mean to compare it).

Very interesting experiment. 
I wrote in my notes that I think Twyla is

black

and Roberta is

white

, but I remember being unsure.

Liked the first volume better. I'm way older than the target audience, so that might explain why Zelie got on my nerves and the characters seemed mostly flat. I'm starting to sympathise with the side in the conflict the reader is clearly supposed to see as the enemy, and I think the writing is to blame and not my character.

I read most of them as a child in translation, borrowed from the library. Now read them for the first time in the original, in this absolutely stunning Folio Society edition. Still a joy, even though, as the editor notes, "there is such a thing as too many cosy mysteries".
