Enjoyed it more this time around! I found the ending a little too ponderous but I think the tension was successfully sustained throughout.

"You've cheated me in a way that's inexpressible, but don't let it worry you, because the joke is entirely on me. You're the only person I think I've every fully trusted and now I'm done for."
So I don't have a visceral affection for Atticus Finch as a civil rights hero from childhood, and there are parts of the ending that are low-key (high-key?) infuriating, but overall it made me feel a lot in my heart place. Despite it being in a rougher shape than it should be (something that I think is a disservice on the publishers' part) you can see the seed of what will become To Kill a Mockingbird. I also enjoy Harper Lee's humor, which makes the angry parts of it more notable. Honestly, it made Harper Lee infinitely more interesting to me as a writer, to know that she had this well of rage inside her. Idk man.

Greene's just too good, even with the residual creepy orientalism, which with me usually results to an insurmountable revulsion. There's a lacerating quality to his prose that leaves no one off the hook. In the game called imperialism, hands never get clean.
