I enjoyed this debut novel from Robert J. Halliwell.

The story and circumstances could be a child/teen we all know. Mixed with elements of fantasy/sci-fi and some suspense/mystery.
It was a fun and easy read, a heart-warming story--especially the found family, the coping responses, and the friendships/relationships with the main female characters...and then Uncle Will, no spoilers.

I very much appreciated the eARC copy from RJ.

Great character development throughout--the two main characters were very fleshed out and resonated with me. Their growth throughout the book was pleasant--even raw/unknown at points--but, never over-the-line or unbelievable (even if their circumstances for meeting were).

The emotions and actions of MC Zoey (14 years old) read very real life--a young teen who has already experienced so much--the death of a parent, neglect, uprooting from home, and more--who is still so young, needs guidance, and most of all LOVE and SUPPORT.

I adored the relationship with Zoey's Great Aunt Carol. Her "kookiness," her arms full of bangles, her scent of patchouli, her penchant for piano to emote her feelings, and, of course, the cookie baking...and counting! Also Carol's heart, her openness with Zoey, and willingness to welcome her into her home, providing care, support, and understanding while Zoey's home life wasn't an ideal/fit for her.

I was on the verge of tears, but held it together!

Appropriate for ages 12 and Up

Look forward to more works from the author, RJ.

Story felt real and authentic. Liked both Nate and Jack and their rekindling of friendship…to a spicy relationship!
And, I liked the re-establishing of family dynamics for each, as they are rebuilding their lives back in their hometown.
I did love that Nate’s Mum and Daughter Cass were so supportive of him throughout the book, so I guess somewhat the opposite is what Jack had. Not hateful or awful, maybe just uninformed and at times hurtful/expected bias.
However, all did redeem themselves and ended with a nice HEA!!
I will also say—SPICY scenes were very HOT! Mercy!
I learned new terms (“stealth”) and the sexual openness that Jack and Nate shared with each other was erotic and beautiful…and full-on!! They did act like teens who couldn’t keep all parts off of each other!!!

A unique story with an unforgettable main character.
A truly original way to tell the story of a horrible event, but still with real-world connotations and consequences.
Jam’s family and best friend, Redemption, have to be some of the most supportive and loving people to ever exist! Every trans person should have such people in their lives!!
Pet has to be the most original character I’ve read…both scary and ominous, yet also understanding and kind to Jam. A singular mission, but still has a “heart.”
Highly highly recommend.

I enjoyed the author’s stories on how each Flamboyant impacted or is reflected in their own life and writings, etc.
I would’ve liked more history and stories about each person, though.
The illustrations and artwork throughout are GORGEOUS!! Vibrant, colorful, and how we might imagine each Flamboyant on stage or out in Harlem at the time!
My Favorite was the Zora Neale Hurston bio/chapter/story.
The book did introduce me to several prominent figures from the Harlem Renaissance I didn’t previously know, and this is very much appreciated!
Also, great to have the recommendations for further reading at the end of the book…always to learn more and spread the word about these amazing queer voices and people!
