DID NOT FINISH

My inability to finish this was not the book's fault. I think I was just in a weird place when I picked it up, and I just never managed to gather the steam to make decent progress.

I'm sorry, book. I may come back to you later.

I was not a fan of the writing, and the story, while intriguing was incredibly trope-y. No part of me wanted to continue reading this.

I'd only recommend this to someone who wanted a watered down version of The Count of Monte Christo, stripped away of all the long-con plotting, and, the very personal revenge. This just didn't work for me

I don't know what I was expecting from this.

Okay, no, that's a lie. I was bored, and expecting something in the vein of the Da Vinci Code. Obviously I didn't finish it, but from I did read I could tell that this was nothing like that. It was gruesome and bloody and macabre without any real sort of plot. And the writing was too textbook and wooden to even compel me to finish this.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I am so disappointed. So very, very disappointed. This was one of my most anticipated releases or 2017, and it... not only did it was unfinishable. I couldn't care about the characters, I couldn't care about the plot (hahaha). I'm just so very disappointed.

Sigh.

How in the hell does anyone enjoy this poorly written excuse of an UF novel?

There's zero world-building; the characters are all boring as heck, Anita is, quite frankly, annoying as hell. Honestly. What is this narration, even? SHE EXPLAINS ALL THE JOKES. SHE ANSWERS RHETORICAL QUESTIONS. It's so insulting to the reader. WHY.

The vampirism wasn't explained. Vampires are apparently evil because Anita has some weird-ass prejudice against them? Like, she believes ZOMBIES have rights, but Vampires all need to be wiped out? That makes sense???

The Ghouls were given a sketchy af explanation - so thin a butterfly beating its wings could have knocked it over ("no one knows?" Really? You gon' giv me that shit?)

Idk man. I assume that, since it's got about 20 books in the series atm, it'll get better eventually. But LORD, I really don't see the appeal right now.

Welp. On to book 2.

The same old bland, recycled characters we've seen time and time again in adult UF. Wooden dialogue. Bad pacing.

Please, no.

This was recommended to me AGES ago, back when I'd gotten into Vampire Academy. I was told that, if I loved VA, I was going to adore this.
WRONG.

FOr a prodigy student in her first year of college, the heroine, Claire Danvers has the mental disposition of a 12 year old. She makes stupid decisions - and I didn't even get very far into the book.
Girl in dorm pushes her down the stairs? Doesn't report it, but moves into a house with five (?) complete strangers ????? Does that... sound... sensible... to anyone ????

I Read this for two hours during a break between lectures. Dropped it like a hot potato when it was time for my next class. Yikes.
