Neryn has finally found the rebel group at Shadowfell, and now her task is to seek out the elusive Guardians, vital to her training as a Caller. These four powerful beings have been increasingly at odds with human kind, and Neryn must prove her worth to them. She desperately needs their help to use her gift without compromising herself or the cause of overthrowing the evil King Keldec.

Neryn must journey with the tough and steadfast Tali, who looks on Neryn's love for the double agent Flint as a needless vulnerability. And perhaps it is. What Flint learns from the king will change the battlefield entirely—but in whose favor, no one knows.

My main complaint about the novel was that it felt incredibly short, even considering that it was written as a Young Adult novel. Raven Flight was 282 pages, but the book ended very suddenly, and I felt like there should have been more to it, especially considering that all of the characters’ kept saying how little time there was to get Neryn in shape for the upcoming battle. I felt like we

That being said, the amount of character development that was written into this book was both well written and entirely necessary. We got development on nearly every character, including King Keldec and his rather mean wife. I imagine that a temperament such as hers would be necessary for her to stay happy married to Keldec, but neither she nor her husband would be people I would like to meet.

I am deeply upset about the character death in the end, though I do think it served a good purpose for both the story and the other characters. I had hoped that Marillier had a different, more regal, fate for this particular character, but it was apparently not to be.

Everything that we learned about Tali was incredibly interesting. Her entire character development arc was wonderful, actually. I loved seeing her change, in Neryn’s eyes, from the unfriendly warrior that she was shown as in Shadowfell, to the companion and friend, as well as warrior, that she truly was by the end of the novel. Seeing Tali and Neryn both grow as people, as well as warriors in their own way, was pretty cool.

My favorite newly introduced character was the Lord in the North. His grief over the loss of his family was almost palpable from the pages of the book. The way his daughter was described, I could almost see her, and that is one of my favorite things about Marillier’s writing. The descriptions she writes of her characters, as well as her scenery, give all of her readers’ vivid images of what Marillier is trying to show us.

I still have to say that this series of Marillier’s has never caught my heart the way that her other series’ have. I don’t find myself compelled to reread, which I have always done for almost all of the author’s other series’. I found the novel mostly predictable, though I enjoyed it much more than I did Shadowfell, which is always good. I’m interested to see how Marillier finishes this in the next novel, Caller, which is due to be released in 2014.

First reaction: OMG

I received a copy of this book from Jenny in Neverland as part of a Neverland Blog Tour, in exchange for an honest review.

I'm gonna be honest and say that I didn't love this novel. While there isn't anything inherently wrong with it, it just didn't click for me.
