Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me was very unique. I wouldn’t ordinarily pick it up in a store, so I was glad a salesperson recommended it to me. The plot idea is one I have never read before and includes a main character whose touch is fatal. Mafi also wrote differently than I was used to, using crossed out words to show the main character’s conflicted personality. At times the crossed out phrases or words were used to add interest (like having a whole page filled with the same phrased repeated and scratched out every time), but other times it didn’t make logical sense and I found myself racking my brain for a reason behind it. I didn’t think it was written that well, but as Mafi’s first published novel, it wasn’t terrible. I kept reading because of the interesting plot and intriguing characters. I enjoyed the ever-moving plot because recently I read a book where the plot hardly moved in the first one hundred pages (more on that in the next review) and that was very boring. Shatter Me was a little violent, but nothing I (or anyone else my age) couldn’t handle. It also had some romance, but there are hardly any young adult novels where the protagonist doesn’t have a love interest anymore. I recommend this book for fans of other dystopian novels or are just looking for something new.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer is a good book, but terribly written. The author is a horrible writer. There are grammatical errors throughout the book and it drove me insane. The most common error was adding a comma before the word “too”. That is incorrect and very annoying. This is a romance novel, thus there will be romance. I have rated it for 13 year olds because there is too much romance for young readers. The main character is obsessed with her boyfriend, which is unhealthy and a bad message for young readers. I highly recommend that younger readers should pick up a book that contains characters with good moral values and an author that can actually write. Besides the terrible grammar, I enjoyed this book. The main character is not easy to like because she is not smart, but you still manage to root for her. If you like vampire and werewolf love triangles than I recommend this book.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a dystopian future novel like no other. I could not put this book down. Everything about it was intriguing. It was written without many high vocabulary words so a younger reader could read it, but the overall message would confuse them. There is mild violence and practically no swearing. The main character is in love, but there is nothing more than kissing. I thought the message was a really good one and could bring up a discussion about looks and whether they really matter. I think that message is important because we indulge too much in how everyone looks when we should be thinking about how people are on the inside. I recommend this novel to my fellow dystopian fans.

Maze Runner is an okay start to the Maze Runner Series by James Dashner. It is a very violent book with multiple deaths of kids and serious injuries. It is not a very hard read and I did not think it was written as well as some of the other books I have read. This novel was a little boring at points and starts slowly. Some kids may find it too boring to continue and may stop the book before it becomes interesting. I for one have a “thing” against slow beginnings. There are numerous books that I read the beginning of and stopped. Thankfully, I was patient enough to keep reading this novel. This book was too so-so for me to give it a four or five star rating. The only reason I kept reading the series was because I wanted to know what happened next. The plot was interesting and had me hooked towards the end. I am looking forward to the movie coming out, I just hope that it is one of those movies that is better than the book. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
