Glimpse, by Jonathan Mayberry, is a supernatural thriller sober addict who sees things when she puts on glasses borrowed from someone on a commuter train and keeps getting chunks of time taken from her.  It's like she blacking out but she hasn't been using drugs or alcohol.  Weird things start happening to her friends, too.  And she also has to battle with herself for giving up her child at birth years ago when she was unprepared to handle such responsibility.

This movie was a roller coaster for me.  I liked it, then I hated it, then I liked it again, etc.  It seemed the book was ALL over the place.  Reading it sometimes felt like this:  I want to make a grilled cheese sandwich.  So I open the bread bag and out flies tarantulas.  Then I put the butter on, but before I put on the cheese, my phone starts barking and flashing with lightning bolts.  But in the end, my sandwich tasted delicious.

Crazy analogy, right?  Well this is a crazy book!  But you have to keep with it to see how it all ties together and how everything gets answered for you.  It can be tiresome at times, but a lot of books have those "slumps."  I got confused many times but then I was able to stick with it and come back around to what was happening.

This is the first Mayberry book that I have read (I have another one my shelf that I still need to read!) and I can say that I am crazy interested to see what else he can do and what other types of stories he tells.  This was a little different to me from what I understood his writing to be, but I still dug it!

This is a 4 star read for me.  It's definitely gonna be a love it or hate it type book, as I even had a few friends that DNFed while others have given it 5 stars.  So this one is totally hard to review and recommend because I KNOW everyone will totally view this book in a different way.  But if you tend to like some of the same books that I do, then check it out!

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for supplying us Night Worms with free hardcovers in exchange for reviews.  We appreciate it a lot!

Terror Is Our Business is a neat book written by Joe and Kasey Lansdale, a great father-daughter team up! It is a collection of supernormal (their term for “supernatural” which is also explained!) sleuth mystery stories. Dana and Jana are the primary characters and they investigate and battle some cool and creepy stuff!

First of all, I loved the way these short stories were presented. They read like you are actually watching or listening to someone tell a story up in front of an audience on stage or something. I really liked that because it helped bring the stories to life more for me and really pull me in to them.

There is a distinct difference to be noticed between the writing of Joe Lansdale and Kasey Lansdale. Both are GREAT writers. One thing I noticed more with Kasey was that she uses a lot more humor and quick wittiness than Joe does. I thoroughly enjoyed her addition of Jana to the stories! I think “Blind Love” was my favorite story in the whole collection, too!

There was a lot of great build up in the stories but then the climax usually ended pretty quickly. That’s the main reason I am going to take a star away from my overall rating. I wanted to know more of how the spirits/jinns/demons/etc were vanquished and more details around those scenes.

The stories are super easy to read and follow. They read quicker than you expect them too. I found myself wanting so much more! I really hope there are more Dana and Jana sleuthing stories in the future because I will definitely be buying and promoting them!

Easily a 4 star read for me! And the cover art by Luke Spooner is FANTASTIC! I just need more of all of this in my life ASAP! Thank you to Lauren Roberts at Smith Publicity for sending the Night Worms an advanced copy of Terror is Our Business in exchange for honest reviews.

I really want to read more about cults. I need to read more about cults, actually. This book is (I think) the first cult-related book I have really ever read. Most of my cult-learnin’ is from movies, shows, documentaries, and podcasts. So Breaking The World by Jerry Gordon was extremely cool for me to read. This book follows the story of David Koresh, the leader of the Branch Davidians sect, who predicted the end of the world in 1993. Obviously the world never ended and this was just another cult. But what if he was indeed the final prophet and right all along? What if The Fallen really were coming to destroy humanity and the world? THAT’S the genius of Breaking The World.

This book reads like an action-packed, dystopian, horror, thriller combo. And while it is not required that you know what happened in the real life events during Waco, TX in 1993 when the FBI invaded the Branch Davidians compound, it does help so that way you can see just how wonderful a story Jerry Gordon was able to craft. This way you know what is his world and what was the real world.

I think this book will speak to a lot of different types of readers, especially those interested in cults, true crime, and horror. It spans a range of themes and I enjoyed every page of it! After reading this book, I want to read and learn more about Koresh for myself. I think this is a fascinating topic and Jerry Gordon did what I wish more would do (or that he would write more books like this) where someone puts a twist on some true crime stories! Such an intriguing book!
