Really fascinating, and I very much enjoyed it.
So rare that a prequel can enrich the main series as much as a book like this.

This is definitely a fascinating book, but the writing style is VERY complex, and it took me a long time to get through it.

A fascinating look into the gender dynamics of the colonization of what is now Argentina. This history is readable, fascinating, and compelling, and it's use of a narrative within the first four or so chapters really pushes the reader forwards.
There's a lot here, but content warnings regarding like, the inherently traumatic nature of colonialism and the intense power dynamics between men and women sexually are to be noted. But it's also history, so it's generally not graphic.

A genuinely fantastic overview of European interaction within the African Continent. I appreciate as well ending with the chapter on slavery, as it both emphasizes the horrific experience colonization had, but also offers a story of human resilience.
Overall, the interactions Europeans had with Africans are far more varied, nuanced, and complex than any American classroom would have you believing. Northrup explains this in an accessible, clearly structured work that can help to unravelling this narrative of simplicity.

This book is both strikingly contemporary and also 100% of it's time. It's a wonderful translation that offers an insight to Erasmus' mind— which is still applicable today. A good read for someone interested in living like a Christian, because overall it does drop a lot of wisdom about Scripture and Christianity. However, still very focused on the idea of salvation, and living out religion every second of every day.
Fascinating.
