I saw the summary to this book and was immediately intrigued. It is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast that includes robots. I have to admit, I was disappointed with this one. While the story had potential, there were things that just felt off for me and I couldn’t get beyond that.
The characters were interesting and I thought the relationship between Alainn (as Rose) and Lorccan progressed well but there was something about it that just felt off to me. It might have been the fact that he thought he was having a relationship with a robot…I don’t know.
I love fairytale retellings so it pains me a bit to write this. It could definitely be an “it’s me, not you” thing here. This story just didn’t win me over but you might like it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy.

Of course I loved the audio on this one...two words. Steve West. Go check this book out - I reread to prepare for the next book and it was a great reminder of all the things that happened. Also, that ending still a killer the second time around.
These Ruthless Deeds is the second book in the These Vicious Masks series and if you like your fantasy/paranormal mixed into a historical YA, definitely check this series out. I myself have been on a bit of a kick lately trying to read more historical YA and this one was a great second book. If you haven’t read this series yet, think Jane Austen meets X-Men…do I have your attention?
Evelyn suffered a pretty big loss in book one and this book pulls us right back into her story. As she works through the pain of her loss, she is also faced with the Society of Aberrations. While she tries to figure out who she can trust and what her purpose is, things start to change for Evelyn.
Overall I liked this book almost as much as book one. I will say the ending upped the rating for me as there is plenty of action and quite a few surprises. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book for these characters.

Are you looking for a Fantasy YA with a pirate feel to it? If so, you should definitely check out Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser. The main character is Caro and she knows she is destined to live her life on the river but she is also worried as the river god hasn’t spoken her name yet and she wonders if he ever will.
I loved Caro. She knows what she wants and she is willing to do whatever she needs to in order to protect her friends and family. She definitely faces off with some tough situations but manages to find her way through and figure out what her fate truly is.
When her father is arrested, Caro takes on a task that she knows may create bigger issues for her than she might be prepared to handle. When she realizes what she has really agreed to, Caro finds herself in a situation where she has to decide what she really wants for herself and what she is willing to do for it.
I don’t want to give much away here but there happens to be a courier that Caro encounters and the banter these two have was fantastic. The way their relationship was developed was one of my favorite parts of the book and I need more of these two.
In addition to that, I thought Tolcser did a wonderful job of pulling me into the world Caro lives in. Despite spending a lot of time on the water/on a boat, the story never felt stuck or dragged. There was plenty of action, danger, and some swoony bits that kept me turning the pages and because I needed to see what was going to happen next.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in this series. If you don’t have this on your radar, definitely go add this to your TBR shelf right now. It has great characters and an interesting story and I don’t know how I’m going to wait until 2018 to see what happens in the next.
