I loved this one you guys. It punched me right in the feels (read: I cried...maybe more than once) and I adore Dill. Check this one out!

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner has been on my to read list for a while and I have to say, I was not disappointed when I finally cracked the cover of this book.

We get the story from three different perspectives (Dill, Lydia, and Travis) which gives us a bit of variation throughout the book. Dill, Lydia, and Travis are entering their senior year of high school which means things will be changing for all of them. They are all considered outcasts in their small town of Forrestville, Tennessee and all for different reasons. Dill is the son of the snake-handling preacher who ended up in jail, Lydia is the opinionated girl who writes a fashion blog, and Travis is obsessed with a fantasy book series which is only one of the things his father dislikes about him. All of these things prompt others to either make fun of them or keep their distance.

I have to say, Dill was my absolute favorite character in this story. He is smart, sensitive, and cares so much for the people he loves. His chapters were the ones that brought me the most heartache as they range from painful interactions with his mother and father, struggling to come to terms with the changes that are in store for him when Lydia leaves, conversation with Travis, and the turmoil he faces every single day because of who his father is. As he struggles to make decisions about his life, it is clear he doesn’t want to hurt his parents. I hated his mother and father for the things they said to him and their willingness to blame Dill for every bad situation they created for themselves. I absolutely loved Lydia’s father for embracing Dill and being there for him however he could be. Even if it meant just giving him a ride, showing him a guitar, or listening to him talk.

The friendship these three have with each other was fantastic. Despite their differences, they had so much love and trust within their circle and they knew who they were when they were with each other. Lydia is so “in your face” about everything and while I liked that about her, I also thought she didn’t fully understand what Dill was dealing with. What I loved most about Lydia’s chapters were the interactions she had with her parents…her dad especially. It was great to see them involved in her life and the way they discussed things with her. One of my favorite parts was when Lydia’s dad sat her down to get her to see just how different her life is from Dill’s and Travis’.

Travis was a fantastic character and provided a great balance between Dill and Lydia. He is comfortable with who he is and that includes his love of a certain fantasy series of books. It is clear almost immediately he has a tough relationship with his father but he isn’t afraid to stand up for the people he loves. As a big guy he could be intimidating if he would want to be but that isn’t who he is at all…not until he is pushed to that point.

I can’t say much about what happens in the story as I think you need to experience it as it unfolds. Just trust me when I say you won’t be able to put this book down or stop thinking about it once you have finished.

Zentner has written a story that had me experiencing every single emotion. There is friendship, love, heartbreak, pain, sorrow, and hope. Yes, you heard me…hope. While there are some really tough issues written into this story, by the time I turned the last page, I had hope that everything was going to be ok for these characters. If you are looking for a moving story that will have you turning the pages to find out what will happen next with all of the characters, definitely consider checking out The Serpent King. This is a fantastic debut from Zentner and I can’t wait to read more from him!

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess is the first book in her Kingdom on Fire series and I have to admit, I loved every minute of this story. As soon as I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down until I finished.

Henrietta Howel has been keeping a secret from everyone but her best friend – she can control flames. As a teacher at the Brimthorn School for Girls, she struggles to hide the part of her that would expose her for a witch and get her executed but when a sorcerer visits the school after hearing that there have been unexpected and sometimes uncontrollable fires, something happens that forces her to reveal herself. When she finds out she is the one the order has been looking for because of a prophecy, and that she isn’t really a witch but a sorcerer, things quickly change for Henrietta.

I really liked Henrietta as a main character. She is smart and she sometimes did things that put her in danger but she tended to do them for all the right reasons. When Henrietta actually learns why she is so valuable to the sorcerers she actually jumps right into learning more about herself and those around her. What she finds out is something she wasn’t really anticipating and it was great to see her navigate her way through the challenges she faced. I thought as a character, Henrietta had quite a bit of growth throughout this book and I look forward to seeing what’s in store for her next.

I thought the world building in this book was really well done. Yes, London is the setting but the London this group of characters live in is at war with a group of Ancients that routinely attack the people in the in the city and it is filled with magicians who are hiding, sorcerers who have pledged themselves to serve the Queen, and even a hobgoblin as a doctor. Add to this the history of the Ancients and what they are doing and it all came together really well.

Outside of Henrietta, there are a number of characters in this book that help to move the story forward. First, the sorcerer who finds her at the school is Master Agrippa. As an orphan, Henrietta eventually came to view him as somewhat of a father figure and I can’t blame her. Once she knew he wasn’t going to kill her because of her ability, she began to trust him and he was always there to help her. Agrippa took her into his home and began to train her to control her power. He gave her a life she never expected and the fact that he allowed Rook, her best friend to stay with her, only encouraged her to think of him that way.

Rook is Henrietta’s best friend although I hesitate to describe him as that. Yes, he is her friend but it is clear they both care for each other as more than that and they are both willing to do whatever they can to keep each other safe. Rook grew up an orphan with Henrietta at the school but because of what he is (an Unclean), he had a very different role at the school. An Unclean is someone who has been attacked by an Ancient. Rook was attacked and survived but has scars that cause him great pain. The scars are also a direct link to the Ancient who attacked him and this is important because as the attacks from the Ancients continue, Rook plays a critical role in the story.

There are also a number of boys within the Order and they are all solid characters. There are two that stand out more than the others – Blackwood and Magnus. I’m not going to say much about these two but I am excited to see where Cluess takes Henrietta’s relationships with these two in the next book. Where Magnus almost immediately embraces Henrietta into the group, Blackwood holds back. They both have their reasons and while things change drastically for all of these characters by the end of the book, I loved seeing not only the building of the friendships and the trust throughout the book but also the growth both Magnus and Blackwood had because of everything that happens.

There are some other characters that have critical roles in the story. Hargrove is the magician that Henrietta meets and ultimately becomes interested in learning more from…for many reasons that I can’t share. She actually meets him her first day in London and when he reveals some secrets, Henrietta is pulled into something she never expected to be. Plus...he pretty much says whatever he wants to and I loved everything about that. There is also another member of the order that is just looking for a reason to discredit Henrietta but you will have to read the book to find out more about that.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. If you like magic, danger, intrigue, great characters, and a fantastic story, you should definitely consider checking this book out. As a first book in the series, the pacing was well done and the story had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book to see where the story goes next. Go get this one my friends, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Beyond Ecstasy is book 8 in the Beyond series by Kit Rocha and while I am sad to see that this series is nearing the end, I was super excited to read this book and have no doubts that I can’t wait to get my hands on the final book when it comes out.

One of my favorite things about this series is that Rocha does a wonderful job of moving the story of the war with Eden forward but not veering away from the characters and their own personal stories. I also love that despite how many characters there are throughout this story I’m not bogged down with them.

Ecstasy focuses on Hawk and Jeni as the primary characters but I was glad to get glimpses of Mad, Rachel, Lex, Dallas, and some of the others. To be honest, both Hawk and Jeni weren’t at the top of my mind as main characters in this series until the last few books but I’m glad we got the opportunity to learn more about them and see their relationship change. They have clearly been drawn to each other for a while but neither of them had been willing to take a leap of faith…until now. Both dive headfirst into their relationship and even though they know they are moving too quickly for the things they want from each other, they plunge forward.

Along with their new relationship, both Hawk and Jeni – along with all of those in the Sectors – are facing the imminent threat of war with Eden. I have to admit, this is the piece of the story that I am most excited to dive further into. For the last few books things have been getting more difficult with Eden and things have definitely come to a head in this book.

As the leaders of Sector Four, Dallas and Lex are forced to make decisions that all leaders have to when they are face to face with danger. Eden is definitely not taking anything for granted and Dallas and Lex are relying on every single person they trust within the sectors to help defeat Eden. They also know that there is a risk that there is a lot at stake…including the people they love and call family.

As the war moves forward, Hawk and Jeni find themselves right in the center of an attack and they are put in a situation that forces them to decide what they would be willing to give up to keep the other safe. This is where they both realize that their relationship is dangerous and they have to figure out what to do.

That’s about all I can say on this one without giving anything away. If anything, know that Kit Rocha has done a fantastic job of creating this entire series and if you are looking for a dystopian story with solid characters and erotica, definitely check this series out. I’m anxiously waiting to see what happens next for all of the sectors and the characters within.

What can I say…I always have mixed feelings when I get to the end of a series. I really want to know what happens and how things wrap up but on the other hand, I don’t want it to be over. Beyond Surrender, the ninth book in the Beyond series by Kit Rocha, had the same reaction from me. I was both excited and a bit apprehensive when I got the ARC for review.

Beyond Surrender focuses on Nessa and Ryder and the story actually starts with these two characters. I have to admit I was on the fence with these two being the main focus for this story but I thought Rocha did a good job with them. The only issue I have is that it felt like things were rushed with them. In previous books it felt like the main romantic characters had more time. Perhaps this was due to the war going on but I wanted to have more time with these characters together. As characters go, I still don’t know how I feel about them. Nessa came off as flighty (except when it came to making the alcohol) and I still don’t know much about Ryder…except that he is smart and has been preparing for war his whole life.

The key to this book (for me) was the war that was going on and how the sectors were coming together to fight Eden. I loved how everything was finally coming together and the sectors were working against everything Eden and the power hungry leaders were fighting for. As Eden continued to lie and take advantage of the people living within the walls, the sectors were trying to figure out how to beat them without extra casualties. When everything comes to a head and Dallas and Lex decide they need to make their move, everything moves really quickly.

There are some casualties in this final book and I have to say, I was a bit nervous when things started to go down. I had no idea who was going to make it and who wasn’t. I won’t say much about this because I don’t want to ruin anything but trust me when I say…if you are invested in any of the core characters, be prepared. A lot goes down in the end and while the final fight is big and bloody, the goal was clear for everyone, no matter what happened. As the end draws near, ending the corruption in Eden is everyone’s goal and Ryder is going to make that happen no matter what.

In the end, I was happy to see how Rocha ended this series. With that in mind, I was glad to hear that Ashwin is going to be the first character for the Gideon’s Riders series. He is a character that has intrigued me since his introduction and I can’t wait to know more about him.

Those of you who have not yet started this series…get to it. I thought later books were more tame in the romance/erotica aspect but the overall story of the conflict between Eden and the Sectors never wavered and I enjoyed this series quite a bit. If you’re looking for something in the dystopian genre but geared toward adults, you should check these books out.

This ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review.

I admit it, I wasn’t sure what to expect for Beyond Ruin. Mostly because it has been a while since I’ve read something for this series but as with any series, I found that once I dove in, I was right back in the sectors and more excited about where things were going.

There are things I liked in this book and then there were things I wasn’t completely buying into. As I think about the story more I really am excited about where Kit Rocha is taking the series. The story of the sectors and their relationship with Eden is coming to a head and things are getting very real, very quickly.

This book focuses on the characters Mad, Dylan (Doc), Jade, and Scarlet. Being totally transparent here, I couldn’t really recall much about Scarlet and Jade from previous books but at the start of this one, Jade and Scarlet are together and Mad and Dylan are together but as the story progressed it became clear that all of these characters were drawn to each other although, there is some tension between Scarlet and Dylan. When they all make the decision to come together things aren’t perfect. Each of them has a backstory and as the challenges with Eden begin to make a larger impact on each of them, the stress of their situations create some issues.

I have to admit, I think of the group, Dylan is my favorite. His struggles with his feelings as well as his drug addiction are something that I find interesting and I really wish we had gotten more information on all of this. One of the things I had an issue with was the way his addiction just disappeared while everything was fine between the group and they only mentioned it once. I’m not sure if the group was just afraid to bring it up or if it was something else but regardless, it felt like it was just a mention when in fact, it appeared to play a big role in Dylan’s life and how he coped with everything.

I also liked learning more about Mad and Jade. Both of them have a history that as the war with Eden moves forward, puts both of them in harm’s way and while Mad refuses to accept the role he was born into, Jade is the exact opposite and embraces who she feels she needs to be, even if that means distancing herself from Mad, Dylan, and Scarlet. I also have to say, I liked how both Mad and Jade revealed pieces of themselves to the group that they have kept hidden from others. It was a definite show of trust and I believe it helped them to make decisions about their lives.

Scarlet is a question mark for me still. I don’t feel like I know anything about her and I don’t know if that is just because I don’t remember her from other books or what but either way, it means I wasn’t completely sure of her with this group. I will say, I liked how she clicked with Mad and how protective she was of Jade. I know she is on the fence with Dylan and maybe that’s why I am on the fence with her. :)

Overall I enjoyed this installment of the series. I am still on the fence about the relationships that include multiple partners – don’t get me wrong, I love how they all find each other but I’m not sure how the long-term relationship will work out. As for the story of the sectors and their push against Eden, I am super excited to see what happens next. I always love when Dallas and Lex are included in chapters and the off shoot chapters are always interesting as I like to see where the other characters are tying into the existing story. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and seeing what’s in store for everyone! If you haven’t started this series yet and you like dystopian and erotica, definitely consider it.

3.5 stars. Review to come.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author. I thought the characters were well developed and the story kept me engaged. There is plenty of danger and action with a magical feel to everything because of what the main characters, Ada and Corinne can do.

I loved the friendship that Ada and Corinne had. No matter what, they were there for each other and they truly made the story so good. I really liked the historical feel to this one and thought the cast of characters helped to move the story along.

I will definitely be looking for more from Destiny Soria in the future!
