Broken Crowns, the final book of the Internment Chronicles by Lauren DeStefano, is a book I was both looking forward to but also dreading. I really enjoy this series and I am horrible with final books in a series mostly because I don’t want the good ones to end. On the other hand, of course I want to know all the things so…it is a balance.
The story picks back up shortly after Burning Kingdoms and we get to dive back into the world of the main characters, Morgan, Pen, Basil, and the rest of the group. As we get back into it, it is revealed that Internment is sinking and Morgan decides she is going to do what she can to stop it.
As far as characters go, Morgan is still interesting and wants what is best for those she loves but I really wanted her to be better to Basil. I loved him and thought he was lovely and no matter what wrong Morgan did, he was always willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
The story itself moved along well and the twists and turns made it interesting. I have to admit that this book didn’t keep me as engaged as book one – I have a feeling it is because I had to wait in between each book and tended to forget everything in between which meant I had to get caught back up each time I dove back in. With that said, I thought this was a solid series that might be a better experience if all the books are read back to back.
Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for the review copy!

Christa Desir definitely does not write books for the faint of heart. If you are ever looking for a book that will have you feeling all the things and trying to make sense of some very difficult situations, definitely pick up one of her books. They are not easy topics and in the case of Other Broken Things, we follow Nat, a recovering alcoholic.
I love how Desir doesn’t go out of her way to make bad situations nice and pretty and fun. Her stories, this one included, take the reader on a realistic and dark journey right alongside the character(s) and I found Nat’s story just as difficult to follow as Desir’s other characters.
I think everyone should pick up one of Desir’s books at some point. I don’t care if you think it “isn’t for you”…it doesn’t matter. Desir’s writing is gritty and real and she can take a reader somewhere they have never been. I know that when I pick up a book from Desir I won’t get fluff and in some cases I might even cry. And I’m ok with that.

This one just wasn't for me...which is odd as I love fairytale retellings.. I think that in comparison, this one just didn't jump to the top of my favorites list. I do love the cover of this one though.

Blood Passage is book two of The Dark Caravan series by Heather Demetrios and I was pretty excited to get an early copy of this book as this one picks up right where Exquisite Captive left off and we are pulled right back into Nalia’s story.
There is so much I like about these books. Demetrios has built out these characters so well that they aren’t just one thing and as I was pulled along in the wake of their stories, I decided I really enjoy these books.
If you are looking for a book/series that takes you into the world of Jinni and exotic locations, consider checking these books out. I am excited to see where Demetrios takes the rest of this series with the next book.
