Whenever I read a Colleen Hoover book I know that I am going to be experiencing just about every emotion and Maybe Someday is no exception. From the first page, Hoover grabs the reader and yanks you into Sydney and Ridge’s stories without letting you go until the last page is turned.

Sydney has just turned 22 and is having the worst birthday…ever. She just found out that her boyfriend (Hunter) of two years and her best friend (Tori) have been hooking up behind her back…for quite a while. After confronting them, Sydney decides to move out of the apartment she shares with Tori but unfortunately she doesn't really have anywhere to go. This is where Ridge comes in.

Ridge lives in the apartment across the courtyard and for the last two weeks has been trying to talk Sydney into writing the lyrics to the music he creates for his band – from across the courtyard via text and signs. They don’t really know each other but what Ridge knows is that Sydney is the answer to the writer’s block he has been experiencing. He also knew that Hunter was cheating on Sydney and happens to be the one that tells Sydney about it….which leads to her confronting them and moving out.

As Sydney sits outside in the rain trying to figure out what the heck she is going to do, Ridge has his roommate go get her and tells her she can stay in their spare room. As they come to an agreement, Sydney offers to sign over the music she writes with Ridge in exchange for a place to stay.

I thought Hoover did a wonderful job of developing the friendship between these characters and while Sydney is pretty much an open book, Ridge definitely has some secrets. One of which was completely unexpected (and I won’t say what it is because I don’t want to ruin anything). There is a lot of background story that plays a role in the current situation and I know I’m being vague but I think it is important to learn everything right along with Sydney.

What I really liked was how these two characters were able to communicate through the music to one another. The things they couldn't talk about were the things that came out through the lyrics and music they wrote together and they both know things could get messy really quickly…and they do. Through the creation of their music, both Ridge and Sydney begin to realize they are becoming more than just friends to one another. The problem with this is that Ridge has a girlfriend (Maggie) who he loves absolutely and although he admits to developing these feelings for Sydney, he admits he will never leave Maggie.

I felt for Ridge – he was being pulled in half and it was clear he loved both characters. Because of his sense of loyalty and some other things tied to his relationship with Maggie, he wasn't going to leave her but he also couldn't help being drawn to and developing the feelings he has for Sydney. Yes, he probably should have asked her to move out sooner than he did but that didn't happen. Now, facing the decision, everyone knew what he was going to choose.

I loved the secondary characters in this story. Although Maggie is the girlfriend, she is definitely likable and that is what makes it so tough to root against her. She has been faced with challenge after challenge and Ridge is the person that has been there for her and has loved her no matter what. She is kind to Sydney and this is what makes it hard for Sydney to do anything that would hurt her.

I loved Warren. He is Ridge’s best friend and is almost like a brother to him. He is in a tough situation because he sees what is going on but he also knows what Ridge will do if faced with having to make a choice. He has known both Ridge and Maggie too long and knows their stories enough to try to warn Sydney. The scene where Warren and Sydney come back to the apartment after being at the hospital was great because is showed his depth as a character as well as how much he really cared – not just about Ridge and Maggie. Yes, he was angry but when he finally calmed down and talked to Sydney, it was obvious he knew no one was really to blame, they just needed to do something about moving forward. He definitely viewed himself as Sydney’s friend as well and I think what I liked most about him was the fact that he continued to help her and be her friend even after she moved out of the apartment.

So – no spoilers here. I’m not going to say how this all ends but I will say I though Hoover did a wonderful job. Not only are there great characters and a lovely story but the tie in with the music also helps drive the story forward. I can’t wait to experience it with the music that was done by Griffin Peterson as I have a feeling the vocals will have a bit more impact on me when I can hear the songs. As I mentioned, I always expect to experience a million emotions when reading a story by Colleen Hoover and this book is no exception. If you enjoyed any of Hoover’s other books, definitely check this one out as well because I don’t think you will be disappointed.

2.5 stars for this.

Overall the story was good it just felt a bit bumpy to me. There were times where the transitions from one chapter to the next didn't make sense or I had to pause and re-read to figure out what was really going on within a chapter.

In the end, the story was interesting enough to keep me turning the pages but I didn't enjoy this one as much as I liked Adi's other book. It was a pretty quick read.

Wild Swans by Jessica Spotswood was a book I was excited to get my hands on. I love her Cahill Witch Chronicles series so when I found out she was writing a Contemporary YA I immediately added it to my TBR shelf.

It’s the summer before Ivy’s senior year and she has plans to do whatever she wants for once. No classes or jobs or anything her granddad wants her to do so she can further find out what her “thing” is. This story immediately grabbed my interest and I couldn’t put the book down until I finished. I loved Ivy. She is smart but what got me was her story. She lives with her granddad and in a town where her last name comes with expectations and everyone know everyone else’s story. These are the biggest reasons that her mother left town.

This story really revolves around the relationships Ivy has with the people around her. There is a romance aspect as well but it’s the family and friends who surround Ivy that drive the story forward. Immediately a few things happen that completely change how Ivy’s summer will go but the biggest thing is the announcement from her granddad that her mother is going to be moving back in with them for a while.

I have to admit, most of the time I was reading this book I wanted to just give Ivy a hug. When Ivy finally comes face to face with her mother, she is devastated to find out that her mother was only a short way away and could have come to see her anytime. When she also finds out that she has two half-sisters, Ivy is clearly thrown. The other piece to this that really had me wanting to scream at her mother for her was that Ivy’s sisters have been told that Ivy is their aunt – not their sister – and neither of them know the real story. The fact that Ivy didn’t have a complete meltdown during this whole introduction speaks to the strength within her.

Outside of Ivy, I thought the secondary characters were well done. Spotswood builds a great cast of supporting characters to add to Ivy’s story and introduce some sensitive topics. All of these pieces add up to making this a wonderful book.

There’s no question in my mind that Ivy grows throughout this book and the change in her personality is for the better. When we first meet her she was willing to do whatever she needed to in order to make everyone around her happy but by the end she finally recognized she needed to stand up for what she wanted. I loved the relationship that Ivy creates with her younger sisters despite the challenges all three face having the mother that they have.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. If there was one thing I wish it had it would be more closure. The ending felt very open-ended and somewhat incomplete to me – that could be because maybe I wanted to know more about how things would end up for Ivy but regardless…I’m hopeful that Spotswood will someday put an epilogue or something out telling me how things end up! If you like contemporary that includes some very real issues, definitely consider checking this book out.
