If you loved My Sister, the Serial Killer then this is an immediate buy. This is like the literary form of an exceptional Nollywood movie. The characters and plot are deeply rooted in Nigeria and culture, even parts deemed taboo, but in a sensitive and intelligent way that has you rooting for all the characters, even the most diabolical. Give this book all the awards

I find that the blurbs for Toni Morrison books often omit what the book is at its most basic description. This is a love story and a beautiful one at that.

It’s YA but definitely for older readers. The sexual tensions might be a bit much for younger audiences

This is the Bohemian Rhapsody of novels. It’s a little bit of everything. Speculative, sci-fi ish, a dash of sexy romance… all wrapped up in an intricate contemporary novel exploring family relationships, the many dimensions of black womanhood and how black women and childhood are often left behind in childcare and mental health. This isn’t going be everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it.

Can you call it dystopian when it sounds alarmingly similar to real life? Butler said that in writing this novel and the sequel she imagined what natural consequences we would suffer if we continue on our current trajectory with no extraterrestrial or psycho telekinetic influence. She imagined irreversible climate damage, economic crisis, a wider gap between the rich and the poor, and a government promising to protect us while enabling corporations to exploit us.
Brilliantly written, engaging and poignant for our time especially.
