I liked this book but didn't end up loving it as I thought I would have.

I think overall, I needed to spend just a little more time with the characters to really fall in love. Fenris, for example, was a little bit flat to me: he gets a (tragic of course) backstory, but not a lot of personality. And since he
is the love interest, the romance fell a bit flat for me too
[mild spoiler I'd say].

At first I did not see at all why this book is so often recommended to people looking for cosy fantasy. After reading it, I feel I understand a bit better: it's still a bit high stakes and dark to be cosy fantasy I think, but it has that heart-warming quality that makes people recommend it in the same breath as A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Legends and Latte's, Murderbot Diaries and The Goblin Emperor.

All-in-all, I had a fun time reading this and would recommend if you're looking for a standalone that's a quick read with heart-warming, found-family vibes...

Written in a peculiar, but beautiful style. Very sad, but also powerful.

I really liked this. It's beautifully written, and so tragic.

Ooh boy I did not like this. It started off as maybe a three star read, and I thought I'd finish to see the end but boy I liked it less and less the more I read. Still finished though, so I guess the joke's on me.

The characters are one-dimensional, even the POV characters. Talking about that - I hated the mix of first and third person perspectives. I did kinda like Maggie's perspective.

Alex Cross is not believable as a father and I did not think he made a particularly convincing black man either: he felt very 'written by a white man' (granted, I am also white, but I've read plenty og black characters written by black auhtors and this read very differently). Neither does he seem like a very good detective, all of the case breakthroughs are basically strokes of luck, or the work of other teams.

The villain is also not very complex, he is the Evilest evil that ever evilled. Maybe scary, but not very interesting ya know.

The title made me think this was going to be more comedic/light-harted than this was. I didn't mind the first part (the notes of her sessions with her therapist), but really disliked the essays

I was a bit 'meh' on Red, White and Royal Blue, but I really really loved this. My favourite romance of the year. I went into it unaware of the time travel angle and I was very pleasantly surprised 😊. I cried for the last 80 pages or so... It's probably not perfect, but comes pretty close (for me at least)...
