“But unlike the alchemists, we've actually figured out the key to the transformation of a thing. It's not in the material substance. It's in the name.”
This book illustrated the true colonialism of words. I will never look at hysterical the same way again. This book was dark academia but it was so much more than even that.
It was a wealth of information, arguments, history, politics, literature, and above all, words. Meaning. It painted a picture of colonialism through a fictional story in a way none of my textbooks have ever been able to illustrate.
This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. I learned, I laughed, I cried, I reevaluated. Congratulations on a modern classic, R. F. Kuang.
“That's just what translation is, I think. That's all speaking is. Listening to the other and trying to see past your own biases to glimpse what they're trying to say. Showing yourself to the world, and hoping someone else understands.”
