On the same day she's fired from her job, Emily is aproached to go on reality dating show The One. While I was expecting this to be a romance read, it was more of a contemporary fiction read with a side of romance.
This was a lot like taking a behind-the-scenes look at The Bachelor, both from a contestant and woman producer's point of view. During the show, Emily goes on a journey for all the wrong reasons, but ends up learning a lot about herself, reflecting on her Catholic upbringing, role of women, and her sexuality. She's honestly pretty uninteresting until about 60% through the book. I flew through this read because I wanted to see what would happen, but felt the ending was a little lackluster and could've used more of a resolution.
Read if you:
- are interested in the behind-the-scenes of The Bachelor
- have ever felt like you're putting on a front
- like Sally Rooney books

Fantasy readers, you need this book. Necromancy! Religious themes! Court! Betrayal! And also a love triangle with some swoony characters, a really BA female main character, very interesting side characters (including the cutest lil librarian) and lots of scheming. The world/magic-building definitely took a little longer in this book, so the pace was a bit slower at the beginning, but whew the end of this book sped right up! I loved the time at court, especially with the royalty and church dynamic, adventure with romantic intrigue in unique settings, and dark air of mystery and magic in this book. Can’t wait for this series to continue!
Read if you:
- appreciate a good magic system
- can handle a love triangle
- want a necromancer MC
- love time at court, but also get giddy at the mention of catacombs
- regularly read fantasy and dark academia

This is a really tender, beautiful story set in rural Colorado starting in 1948. Victoria works on her family’s peach farm and one day falls in love with Wilson Moon, a Native American who is NOT welcome in the community and actually gets placed in wanted ads around town. This story blends a coming of age story with motherhood, acceptance, racism, land rights, adoption, residential schools, family drama, nature, and friendship. It’s pieced together incredibly well to make it lyrical, beautiful, heartbreaking, and a really special story spanning decades.
Read if you:
- enjoy impactful historical fiction
- are a mother
- want your heart to be both broken and squeezed
While this audio is well done, I definitely recommend physical over audio on this book so that nothing is missed.

Wren’s fiancé is in love with someone else. When her relationship falls apart, she goes to her dad’s farm in Indiana go get out of the UK for awhile. There, she meets Anders - he’s got a wall up, but she can’t help but want to get to know him more.
Only Love Can Hurt Like This is a good intro to sad romance. While I expected to be sobbing based on the title, this is more of a “sad and hard circumstances that make love hard to navigate” kind of read where you won’t necessarily be 100% completely destroyed. Paige Toon does a great job of adding lots of subplot to her romance - there are really wonderful family and character background stories in this book as well. I absolutely loved the farm setting, dynamic between family and friends, and the way Wren and Anders got to know each other over the course of the book. There was a twist I didn’t expect and

The Lost Apothecary was a “like” more than a “love” for me, so I wanted to give Sarah’s next novel a try. Plus, seances! This was also a “like” for me - I enjoyed the mystery with twists, feminist themes, seance talk, and dual POV. This book is perfect for people who love Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie and want that with some spirits, brothels, and LGBT themes. I definitely recommend to that crowd - it’s just not a genre that’s usually a favorite for me!
