aw man, I missed this book. I still have to give it a 5/5 stars. Sue me!

re-reading April 2019
5 👏 outta 👏 5 👏 stars

4/5 stars!
I felt this one had a slow start for me, I was a little bored at first, but once the action turned up a little and we got to see more of the characters interacting with each other I REALLY enjoyed it! I will for sure be picking up the next in the series!

3.5/5 stars
this actually wasn't terrible. I hate a couple of bits that were never condemned, which sucked. surely in the 90s pedophiles were still wrong?
Except for that I enjoyed this in a weird way. You know that episode of Black Mirror where a woman gets a cyborg made to look and act like her dead husband - this has those vibes except it wasn't sinister... which made it feel sinister?

I'll give this one a 2.5ish/5 stars. Not the worst, but not my favourite. Just right in the middle.

I have a lot to say, but not the time, I may or may not give this a better review later...

I'm wavering between 4.5 and 5 stars, mostly because there were a few things that went on that were a tad unsettling (was it incest? like kinda? but also... idk?).
However, I absolutely loved the world and the characters that Jemisin brought to life here.
I'd like to know if anyone has read the entire trilogy and their thoughts? Looking at the synopses for the next books, it seems more like a companion series, and (at least at the moment) I really want to keep following these characters. Maybe after a bit of time away from the book I'll be able to pick up the next and read new characters without being spiteful.

Picked this up, not only because I actually wanted to read it, but also because recently I've found myself surrounded by Norse mythology (taking a fantasy class, a heroes class, and watching my friends play god of war). And I know exactly nothing about Norse mythology, despite seeing the MCU Thor movies.
I really enjoyed it. Gaiman retelling these myths in his style made it super fun, but he also preserved the mythic voice that these stories often need. I just loved everything about it and really enjoyed myself while I was reading, so I have to give it 5/5 stars!

I think had a not felt rushed to read this for class I could've enjoyed it a lot more. I definitely need to make plans to re-read this in the future, and then I think my rating might change.

I feel like I might be missing something, but at the same time, I know that Wells just really needed an editor. This novel could've cut out a good chunk of the descriptive elements and still would hold up today. I can see it's merit as a classic sci-fi read, but I also really didn't like it.

Read this for my sci-fi class, and was actually pretty surprised by it. I found it a tad boring, and because of it's short length that disappointed me. Otherwise, I found it really interesting, consider the industrial revolution and what people thought it might lead the world to.
3/5 stars.
