First of all-- Huge thank you to NetGalley for an ARC copy of the audiobook.
I have been a HUGE Emma Lord fan since her debut, Tweet Cute. TC is one of my all-time favorite YA contemporary romances. I knew I would give anything else she writes a chance after that fabulous debut. I read her sophomore book as soon as it came out (You Have a Match) and.... it just wasn't my favorite. When I saw NetGalley had audio ARCs of When You Get the Chance, I figured I had to just take a shot at getting an early copy. Y'all. Seriously, this book is SO good. Dare I say that it's even better than Tweet Cute???
Things to love:
-Super unique MC who is simultaneously so confident in herself and what she wants, but also so unsure of how to be herself. This is such a hard balance and Emma managed it perfectly.
-Adorable love interest-- definitely a grump; Millie's arch-nemesis who has secretly been on her side all along (SWOON)
-Intricate and realistic family dynamics. Millie is raised by her single dad and his sister. She has such a sweet relationship with both of those parental figures. I love seeing non-traditional families in media and this was done so well
-Kind of a retelling of Mamma Mia???? I mean, what's not to like?
-Hate to love romance
-Specific to the audiobook, the narrator was great-- emotive without being over the top; using different voices without being silly. I would highly recommend the audio version of the book.
The two little things I didn't love:
-One of the phrases repeated throughout the book is "Millie mood." This is meant to convey a very specific intense mood that Millie has that is somehow different than just a regular mood or emotion? It seemed silly to me and I found myself rolling my eyes whenever the narrator said that phrase.
- There's a Harry Potter joke about Millie being left on her father's doorstep by her mother in a "Dumbledore move." Haven't we moved past HP references in all media? It's generally not funny and also just isn't really a fandom I want to support anymore. I think this could easily be cut from the book.
Overall, I totally adored this book. I have had a preorder placed for several months now and after reading the book, I am highly anticipating the release of the final copy so I can get my grubby hands on it. An easy 5/5.

Badger is in a funk today-- nothing is fun. Not even all of his favorite things. Turns out that all his friends are having a similar feeling today too. Luckily, that all changes when Mouse comes over!
The art in this book is so stinkin' cute. I loved the style and all the adorable little woodland creatures. It felt whimsical and happy while still very accessible to children. Could help children come up with creative ideas for what to do when they are bored.

I really really liked this until the last 2 chapters. I do not understand some of the plot at the end, especially the part involving Parker. I don't mind an open ending, but I do mind when there's a huge plot point added in for what seems like no reason.

Stinky feet is a rhyming book about a toddler with very stinky feet. He does things throughout the day like eat lunch with his family, play with blocks, and take a bath. All the while his stinky feet are there with him.
It was cute with a fun art style. I can think of some children I know who are 2-3 who would find this book hilarious just because it repeats "stinky feet" over and over.
Nothing super memorable but nothing super horrible either. Very middle of the road for me.

This comic was so delightful. I sat down intending to read for a few minutes and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. Way day diaries follows four best friends over each of their individual hair wash days and then ends with a chapter about them all going out together.
Each girl had her own color scheme that just perfectly matched her character. I don't know how the author was able to showcase each girl's personality so clearly in only a few pages, but I felt like I genuinely knew each one.
I loved seeing the friendships and it's always great to see a story about Black joy! (But take this with a grain of salt since I'm a white reviewer).
Overall this comic was absolutely fantastic. My one qualm that took this down a half star for me had to do with a scene between Cookie and Davena. Davena is suffering from depression and is telling Cookie about how she's been struggling and had started seeing a therapist. She and her therapist are talking about the possibility of antidepressants. At this point, Cookie tells her not to do it since she looks fine (red flag!), you don't know what it will do to your body and mind (red flag!), and offers her a crystal instead. There's already so much stigma around getting professional help and it's disappointing to see this handled so poorly in the text. This did knock the book down a half star for me, but I would still highly recommend it for comic readers since the overall story and art style were so fabulous.
