Pretty similar than Marie Grubbe. Not bad but not the most memorable book either.

I understand that had I been introduced to this classic earlier I would have probably had less problems with it. Now I found it too preachy and two dimensional in all aspects even though I tried to put it in the right time frame. Times were different then but still. Even when I was little I couldn't really relate to these kind of books. I couldn't even finish one Famous Five and they're all action packed.

Found this really numbing and pointless. Not even the romantic scenes stirred my experience and that is a lot to say from me. Comparing this to Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights is like comparing wood to ice cream.

Reading this it should be remembered that it is more like a theme than a story. Dostoyevsky himself experienced prison life which I think makes this fairly trustworthy. Still, I didn't like it.

There were some not very interesting parts but they don't weigh much in the shadow of that incredibly beautiful writing. Mr. Gray himself is an interesting character. He wants to survive at all costs and in return his soul is marred. Dorian has the urge to be beautiful in order to keep his place in society which reflects also today's world. Really how far we are ready to go?

Bursting with luxury and emotional roller coasters, this classic is a quick read. Nevertheless this matter doesn't make the story unimportant. Life doesn't always have a happy ending whether you want it or not. Marguerite and Armand were in love but it wasn't enough. The ending was really touching and the story went on in a good pace but I still hoped it would have been a slightly better in some way.
