I'd suggest reading through [b:Paris Was a Woman: Portraits from the Left Bank|1070208|Paris Was a Woman Portraits from the Left Bank|Andrea Weiss|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51UMvdKrEcL._SL75_.jpg|1056888] first and then start tackling this, an extremely deep analysis of the female Paris expatriation. I just recently discovered this fantastic subject and all its wonderful women, some of who still are unfortunately quite unknown to the general public, trampled by the male Modernists.
Damn, it was a real chore at times. Too much in a list form to keep me interested the whole time.
Can you believe I got this with only 2 euros? Even when translated into Finnish the writing is beautiful for a non-fiction work. It blends in perfectly among those little Colette quotes. Not only Thurman has captured the spirit of Colette she also writes objectively and corrects some of the misconceptions that the reader may have heard about her.

The beginning was good, the scene in the café was beautifully written. Maybe the overall message was good too, about leaving and coming back, but I still didn't like it that much. For example the characters were two-dimensional, so common in books of today. Although I would read this again any day instead of The Kite Runner.

Morbid and filled with dark humour yet the young boy who tells the story is innocent in some way which shows in some of his conduct and the way he mixes up words like children usually do. The story also shows that being normal is invented by the society and that you can find affection in the utmost surprising places.

Overall the subject was pretty interesting even though there were some confusing sentences when the topic got carried away to something that had nothing to do with the original theme. Left an aftertaste that the research hadn't really been polished enough.

I felt really unattached to this book. Like there was an invisible wall between me and it. I didn't understand the fascination of endless lists of the perfume ingredients and how useless the characters were. I don't mind a weird book but this had some kind of idiotic weirdness around it and overall seemed kind of flat.
On the pages my favorite artist comes to life and it's like sitting on his shoulder and witnessing all his struggles with art and women and saying goodbye to him on his death bed. In a form of a novel this isn't probably the most reliable source and some things may not be true at all but you can get a basic idea what kind of a person and artist Henri was. Highly recommended to his admirers.
