Only three stars? Yeah.
I do love these characters and the world is getting even more interesting, but not much happened.
What we got in Chainbreaker was mostly backstories, explanations of how this world works, and setting up what should be a great third and final book.

Hear me out: I'm the kind of reader who can enjoy a story even if the action isn't great, or if the plots don't interest me that much, so long as I love the characters.
For that reason, I'm really into this story.
The story of Danny and Colton (and Daphne) and clock towers and clock spirits and the magical elements brought to this world. They are so interesting and fit perfectly into the kind of story aspects I love without me knowing that I loved them.

HOWEVER... I really did not find the development of this book in itself as good as I wanted it to be. (I will point out that I wasn't in the best mental headspace at the time I was reading so it may have playd a part in the underwhelming)
* Danny and Colton aren't in the same place for 90% of the book... and are left doing dumb things.
* I loved Daphne in book one and I was very pleased to see she got a bigger role in book two... even if I wasn't as impressed by her as I was expecting to be.
* The new characters are somewhat interesting... just not enough for me to care for them as much as the characters we already know. Small exception for those guys in the air that I feel are going to become some of my favourite characters...
* Discovering more about India and how they look after towers was a strong point of this book!

I just didn't feel like anything met the expectations I had - but the story still has the potential to meet them. Things were a little looked over, or just said or done without much detail.
Onto book number three now to get more out of this world, out of these characters, AND GET MY BABIES BACK TO SAFETY BECAUSE THAT ENDING AS NOT AND ENDING.

(Honestly, someone ripped the last pages out, right...?)

4.5
I'm crying a little too much. I've never seen myself so much in any book. Ever. For that I treasure this book so damn much.
For the own-voices anxiety, queer and aspie representation, thank you so much, Jen Wilde.

I haven't ever grinned as much as I did when Charlie and Alyssa were interacting.
I haven't ever felt in love with a guy as much as I did seeing Jamie simply look at Taylor.
I haven't ever felt as validated as whenever Taylor mentioned anything about herself, her insecurities and her willingness to be brave despite those insecurities.

You're not seeing 5 stars because of a couple of things:
- I predicted absolutely everything;
- Alyssa's character (and almost every secondary character) lacks depth;
- As YouTubers, Charlie and Alyssa are in love with the personas the other has put online, not yet with whom they truly are, and it's a shame this isn't even mentioned (because it's less cute, right?) in the book)

But these aspects were looked over so easily in the grand scheme of things because the good was so much more important than the bad.

Adorably perfect.

This mini comic is PERFECT. Every kid (and adult) should read it.
It only takes 15 minutes, read it here.
It is about princesses saving each other and believing in themselves and not falling into the boxes and rules they thought they had to live by.

Basically if everyone in Grease was queer.

SO GOOD.
The Grease/50s references are beautiful and the diversity went beyond what I even expected. It was brilliant.
Honestly, this comic is basically Grease, if everyone was queer.
Read it for free on Tapas: https://tapas.io/episode/186441

Buddy read this with the beautiful Elsa.
I'll maybe make a full review sometime if I'm bothered.

But basically, I expected a Little Mermaid f/f retelling and that is absolutely not what we got. Unexpected isn't always bad, but in this case what we got was no where near as interesting as what could have been done. Nothing was particularly developed and I hated the main character, found her dumb and annoying, so obviously I couldn't enjoy the book, sadly.

4.5 /5 - AAAAAAAAH THAT ENDING WAS SO GOOD, LADA!!!
I really do love her ruthlessness. I also love that we get to see what she cares for, *who* she cares for. And the fact that she knows she can be a ruthless dragon in charge of armies of men who wouldn't ever have considered a women capable of holding a knife, but she's still proud of her female body and mind.

I must say though... as opposed to book 1, I found Radu's chapters more exciting. The book remains very fast paced on both sides but Lada's story is centered around her own goal and is only really important to her. Whereas Radu's chapters follow the battle. The taking of Constantinople by Mehmed. And I felt more impatient to get back to what Radu was getting up to than Lada.
(Notice how what goes on in their chapters are a perfect representation of their personalities? Ugh)

As much as I love both characters so very much, I also want to punch them in the face sometimes. GET OVER MEHMED. None of you deserve him. Especially my darling Radu. Way too much of his time is spent wondering how he can make Mehmed proud. It was too much. My baby is clearly lost to his devotion to the sultan and it breaks my heart.

This whole series is centered around two siblings and their strong and complicated feelings for each other. They are so very different, have opposing personalities, want different things and act very differently, but in their core they both care about each other.
I love them both, as different as they are, and I honestly hope they will find a way to find each other again and manage to show their love.

I really really wanted to love this. Maybe expectations were too high.

There are so many great things about this duology : pirates & sea creatures & sea creature trainers & a brilliant cast of characters. We have women of colour in charge of pirate ships and no one ever questions it. Just like no one ever questions the lesbian relationship. That's what I call positive representation.

I loved Cas and Swift in the 1st book but in this one I almost wanted to punch them. They went from hating each ther to kissing each other in circles over and over and I just couldn't back their relationship anymore.
(although yes, a couple of things Swift did made my heart melt)

For some reason it took me ages to get through. Why?
I believe it lacked urgency. It lacked a pinned goal or threat. A "baddy" is mentionned but even by the end, he doesn't really appear, nor does he have a major threat that is urgently needed to be dealt with. There are a few monster attacks but by the time they came I think I just wanted to be done with the book.

Gosh, th review makes it seem bad. It really isn't. I had just hoped it would be amazing and it didn't live up to my expectations. I would still recommend it and share it and talk about it to whomever might like it !
