EN : 3.5 - 4 / 5 Hmmm...
I picked up this book from my local library without expecting too much. Then I started it and thought it would be awesome. And then I continued and found myself disappointed. Loved the world that was created and the idea behind the story, but sadly it just became the most predictable YA/teenage book with OK characters ... Voilà the short version.
I must say I LOVED the fact that we got a science-fiction universe with old fairytale elements. The parts that reminded me this was basically a Cinderella story were great ! The car, the boot, the 'charming', etc. It was (for once) a unique and original retelling of that specific fairytale.
So when all of those things were introduced at the start, I was excited to see where it would go.
I guessed exactly what was going on from the beginning, so nothing surprised me. I was actually expecting more to it than that, but I'm hoping that will come with the next books in the series.
The characters I thought were okay, I didn't dislike any of them. I was torn between sometimes thinking Cinder was a really good strong character, and other times finding her ridiculously dumb, to whom we had to explain everything. Again, hoping we'll get more badass from her in the next books. Also, I'm excited to see how the new characters and their fairytales will be depicted.
I guess that's where I'm at : Really love the world the writer has created and how she ties in the fairytales we know into a futuristic world. But the plot better be getting less predictable and the characters stronger, if not I won't want to continue...
FR : 3.5 - 4 / 5 Hmmmm...

EN : I bought this on a whim and probably should have researched it more. It's basically a 'get the girl back' story and you know it's ridiculous but the main character still won't realise that.
The intended morals, in the (very) end, were pretty good. Life, loss, second chances, growing up, being young, friendship, love, having more than one soulmate. All of these are good. But it wasn't handled in the best way in my opinion.
It feels like it's trying to be that coming of age novel that everyone loves and quotes - but it never quite gets there. And it's because it's not relatable enough. It's not like anyone's ever had their head chopped off, frozen in time for five years, then put onto a new body to come back to life.
Above that, the main character is whiny, ungrateful and you just want to punch him in the face for the entire book.
Maybe it's just that I was in a bad mood, or maybe as I've never actually been in love, I don't get that desperation, but I just couldn't understand the characters. I would have loved it to focus more on the friendship he had with Kyle. THAT could have been really beautiful.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

EN : I've heard so many great things about Mr Gaiman and reading the first few pages I loved it : even though he's a seven year-old-boy, the main character was described as, basically, me. We played the same games, loved cats and Narnia... However I don't think I've started with Gaiman's best book.
Eevrything was good, without being great. I was expecting it to be amazing and therefor I was disappoited. One of the reasons may also be because I read it in french and not in english?
So although I loved reading about a kid who was basicallt me, I just never found anything to be spectacular and ended up skipping parts, waiting for something magical which never really came.
- I must say, this seems to be an unpopular opinion, many people seem to love Gaiman and I really need to pick another one of his books up. THe Graveyard Book is actually on my shelves staring at me rn ...
