This is a great primer for race relations and those looking to improve their own reactions and thoughts regarding racism. It is very accessible and addresses specific issues head-on - also addressing common responses to being called out on racist words and/or actions. It teaches the things to recognize as ingrained racism and how we are all on a constant pathway of learning when it comes to overcoming racism. Highly recommend as a starting point for the journey.
3.5 stars. I had high hopes and was disappointed. There was a lot of potential here that didn't get fulfilled. Full review/explanation to come.
4.5 stars. A complete gut punch of a book. The writing is excellent and the plot is teasing, pushing you to the edge of your seat but never quite being transparent about the goings on. The narrator is unreliable and the events are traumatic, but it is pieced together quite well and things feel terribly, unsettlingly real. The ending wasn't quite what I had hoped for, but fits with the structure of the rest of the book. This one will stick with me for a while.
