Sometimes I struggle with classics. This was one of those times. I can appreciate the plot and I think that Hawthorne has created some very good (and complex) characters, but I just got tied up in the period narration. This may be one that I need to reread in the future, but for now it was just kind of an okay read for me. Not bad, just not something I got super psyched up about.
Darkly fantastical. I really enjoyed this one. It's a bit of a fluff read if you really get down to it, but I don't care. It was fun and creepy and mesmerizing. I found myself intrigued pretty quickly and, as a result, will likely pick up and finally read the original Baum Oz series. As it is, I was able to slide right into the sequel...which is a good thing because cliffhangers drive me crazy.
A good follow up to Dorothy Must Die. I enjoy the spin on the original Oz and Paige has a good imagination. It was a good story and did do well with continuing the story, but it just didn't grab me as well as the first in the series. However, I had enough enjoyment with it that I needed to hop right into the next book as soon as I was done.
A good continuation of the Dorothy Must Die series, but was a bit more juvenile in the narration in the beginning...that detracted from the enjoyment for me. It did redeem itself as I continued to read. And...you would think I would have learned to check series before I start them. I read this thinking it was a trilogy and that I had all the main novels. Nope. Four books. And I don't have the last one. Dang it! I will be searching it out so that I can complete the series.
I love everything about Backman's writing. It's always captivating. He knows how to tell a good story and keep you on edge. He draws you into the book, making it feel real...as if it were non-fiction rather than a fictional novel. This is a fantastic follow up to Beartown and I will 100% absolutely be reading more of his books.
It took me a bit to get into this book and then found interest in it’s somewhat eccentric movements. The central portion of the book moved relatively well and I began to feel comfortable with the awkwardness. Unfortunately, the ending returned to the jolting feeling of the beginning and it landed quite flatly.
Perfectly whimsical and endearing. Different from the movie I have long associates with the story, but (not so surprisingly) ever so much more entertaining. I’m looking forward to continuing the series.
Good YA fiction with a good hook. I was interested early and read this one quickly. It held up through the ending. If I had not had the sequel readily available, I would have been incredibly upset as the ending would’ve left me hanging. On to book 2!
