Not a bad book. A little different than what I usually read, but still good. Somewhat slower paced that I would have liked.
Based on the ratings I use over at my blog, this one is actually a 2.5 star. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. The story read well enough, but it just kind of plodded along. It was a good premise, but there wasn't much in the way of excitement until the last few chapters and the emotions fell a little flat for me. I didn't hate it, I just didn't love it either. It gets a "just okay".
3 1/2 stars. I was confused by this book for a decent portion of the beginning, but I liked it enough to continue. The way it is constructed begins to make sense as the plot develops. The narrator has a powerful voice and the structure of the wording is put together well, including some good choices in wording and some awkward spellings and puns. It has the right personality for a ninth grade girl. Hulse is good at pointing out everyone's flaws and making it clear that there is some kind of personal development at work for every character in the book. This is one of those books that would be great for a preteen/early teenage read as a precautionary tale.
Not sure quite what to say about this one. A rambling story with a fair lack of clarity. It's just as weird as I remember the movie.
Good story line, but a little rough on the read. This is one of those rare cases where I liked the movie better than the book.
3 1/2 stars. This one started out pretty slow, but picked up for a busy plot with a good ending. The use of Old English made the dialogue a bit more difficult than I wanted, but the characters and descriptions worked well.
