okay, I did not care for this book. this is the last book in the kane chronicles trilogy and I'm only reading it because I wanted to do a reread of all the rick riordan books (and I want to read the pjo crossover short stories!) I will never read this again. I don't really have commentary on it don't really care. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone other than a tween obsessed with the pjo world and has already read all of the other rick riordan published works. I do however want to talk about one thing that is massive spoiler so be warned but I don't think anyone actually reading this will care. okay so one thing I mentioned in my reviews for the previous books in the series is the love triangle. this is actually the one thing that I remembered from when I read this originally like 8 years ago and it is literally one of my favourite things ever. one of the guys that she likes is a guy who's really sick, he's got this family curse which means he's going to die before he turns like 19 or whatever and the other guy she likes is a god so obvs unavailable. oh no how will she pick between them! rick riordan's amazing solution to this problem is two combine both of the guys into one person!!!!!!!!!! you can't make this shit up!!!!!! the sick guy becomes the host for the god except kind of not cause it's a little different so it's more like they become one person all together, idk it's not explained super well. but idc I am so obsessed, sadie kane you'll always be famous. and for that point alone, I give this book 3 stars
I'm rereading and reviewing this as a service to my word and to our god rick riordan. not particularly enjoying this series. sure it has it's funny moments and it's not all around terrible but it's just nothing special and a obviously a scramble to recreate pjo this just things that don't really make any sense. this is the second book in a series so I can't really explain it without spoiling but I don't think anyone really cares about that so I'm just gonna bitch about this book for a bit. so obviously in pjo you have camp halfblood where therey as a bunch of kids who are all training together and it's a fun good time. rick tried to recreate in the kane chronicles however, like why they all kids??? I do not understand this. basically to be part of this like Egyptian mythology thing club, you need to be like the descendants of pharaohs so why are they all children, that doesn't make any sense. in pjo they are all the kids of gods and but like if these kids are the descendants of pharaohs should their parents and siblings come with them??? maybe I misunderstood this but it doesn't make sense to me???
and just don't even get me started on the romance. clearly like rick riordan saw that percabeth was so popular and saw that twilight's love triangle was selling wanted to recreate that type of vibe. it's just so underdeveloped and it's upsetting cause I know what he's capable of writing. the reason why people like percy and annabeth together so much is cause they're both their own individual characters that get so much time and growth put into them, THEN they get together after a five book build up. whereas in the kane chronicles he just tries to do this the exact same thing with random side characters that barely get involved. that like both carter and sadie just choose someone random to be obsessed with from the get-go and you're supposed to root from them to be together like huh? so yeah this isn't terrible, like I said there are lots of moments like the roman mummy part I thought was really funny and clever. but it's just nothing special. like just read the original series instead, this is not worth it (I'm still gonna read the final book though🤪🤪) 2.75 stars

okay so when the pjo show was announced I decided that I would begin an entire reread of all of the riordanverse and get back up to date (I stopped reading after the second trials of apollo book) in anticipation for the show and also because I never read magnus chase and I wanted to actually finish the trials of apollo. at the end of last year I finished the original series (definitely the best) which means that it's time for kane chronicles! um. what to even say. if you handed me both of these series and only told me that they were the same author and nothing else, I would assume that rick riordan first wrote the kane chronicles, then took notes about what worked and didn't work and then used that as a basis to write pjo. like it just seems like a worse draft of percy jackson. and not even in a " ancient gods are real" way. cause I'm not.upset that this is egyptian percy jackson, it's a fun concept and the magic system and hierarchy of the gods is different but the story beats are the same. even down to the opening scene being at a museum where some monster from that mythology attacks the main character and then having a parent death and then having the first book end with the parent coming back cause omg surprise the parent didn't actually die. like was there nothing else you could think ofðŸ˜ðŸ˜ also I think the romance in this series flops so hard. what's so good about the original pjo is that you get the natural build up of annabeth and percy throughout five books of their friendship. that's why people like them so much! tbh I think rick saw how much shipping does free marketing for a series and wanted to shove it in there and then introduced zia and anubis specifically for the purpose of them being love interests and then barely develops them and the romance is literally just "main character sees them and thinks they're hot. now they're in love" huh???. so yeah. we'll see how I find the rest of this series cause I haven't read it since my the first time in 2015 so we'll see if it gets better. 3.25 stars for now.
