this was sweet!!!! this was a great story about first loves and learning to know your worth but I loved the overall messaged friendships being important π₯Ίπ₯Ί art style was also fantastic, I think I'm going to start reading more graphic novels, I just loved this so much! 3.5 stars
I found this very boring sorry, was such a slog to get through a factor in putting me in an almost month long reading slump :// I did read this while I was in tokyo and the mentions of random places was exciting to me but that was about all that did it for me :// 1.25 stars
guys ππππππ helpππππππππ I am so emotional over this. tbh I only picked it up because my library had the audiobook and I saw that it was set in melb and I'm missing home a bitπ₯Ίπ₯Ί it seemed like an easy read to help me get over my reading slump and I thought the premise was interesting but if I'm being real I expected it to be fun but not anything extraordinary because I'm not usually a YA contemporary girlie but guys πππππ I laughed, I cried, I had an emotion breakdown at 4am while Jacinta was sleeping next to me because I just connected to the main character so much, I genuinely can't believe that this book was written about me!!! this was just the perfect coming of age story, I really love seeing coming of age stories set after high school and dealing with the confusion and heartache from moving on and going to uni and trying to make new friends and be a good student and take care of your family and guysπ₯²π₯²π₯²π₯² justπ₯²π₯²π₯²π₯²π₯²π₯² the familial relationships just felt so real, the friendships felt so real, the conflicts felt so real, the relationship and it's ups and downs felt so real, everything brooke thought about or did FELT SO REAL. I love my main girl brooke and you could really see her emotions and build up to her explosion (thank god we have some insane girl representation in booksπ»π»π»π») I love how she felt like an actual person (...felt like me I mean....) and I truly understood every action she took, even when she was acting irrationally I could see exactly WHY she did everything she did. and not only did the author manage to do this with the main character which is, to be frank is quite difficult in contemporary YA sometimes if you want to keep things interesting (I mean look at never have I ever and stuff like thatππ), she did this with every single other character! even though this is a single pov story I understood the motivations and core of every single character and their relationship with brooke (HER AND LAURENS RELATIONSHIP OMGGGππππ) how did she do it make me love along them??? I think this is going in my list of comfort reads and I can't wait to buy a physical copy and reread it many times overππππ 5 stars!!
wow!!!! I am such a massive fan of the fleabag tv show and this is exactly what I wanted!! loved an insight into the creation process and I loved how we heard all the different perspectives and notes from the director, produced, sound design, lighting etc. I just wish there was more because this was very short :// I also think that this would not be that interesting to anyone who has not already watched the show/play but for someone who loved the show this was great! I found it really interesting to see what she expanded on in the show and what scenes she kept exactly the same, I would love to see this in person some day! 4.25 stars
oh how do I review this. I thought this was great! this was really one of those books where I a lot of the quote like "spoke" to me (that's so embarrassing ππππππππ) I was really charmed by the main character and I specifically read this while I was in new york and I'm so glad I did! this was one where the setting was very present in the story and it was really fun to read about lots of things that I was directly experiencing or places I had gone to! I was fully on board this train until the like 30%-40% where there is a reveal which if you've read this book you will know what I'm talking about. I didn't hate it but I wasn't that big of a fan and I lowkey would have preferred it if there was no reason and it was just a random thing happening instead of the almost scifi psych elements??? idk iykyk ig. this was definitely a more funny take on my favourite "depressed girl does nothing" genre but omg this book is so so straight oml ππ anyway, highly enjoyable and this is one of the books I'm putting in my list to buy and eventually reread and tab, can't wait to force my friends to read thisππππ 4.25 stars
my fourth christmas book of the trip ππ once again another perfectly pleasant but ultimately forgettable romance. I read this cause I wanted to read about a celebrity going back to their hometown for the holidays and reconnecting with a childhood friend (so I can use it as my tis the damn season book rec!!) but the fact that he was a celebrity was barely an aspect, if you changed it to any job where he had to live out of the UK would have been fine. I thought the man guy was funny (I've already forgotten his name) but other than that I didn't really care, also 2.5 stars
slay but ultimately forgettable, I honestly haven't thought about this book a single time since finishing. I really appreciate the discussion of woc & the lgbt+the people in academia and of course I love my sapphics and this was perfectly pleasant but nothing particularly impactful 2.5 stars
my 3rd christmas book (and my 2nd sapphic christmas romance) of the past 3 months, idk why I've randomly been reading Christmas books but the vibes are there. I appreciate what this author did to subvert the trope but at the same time I love the fake dating trope (especially when it's a meet the family for some sort of holiday/celebration type of thing) and tbh I personally would have preferred if Andrew was the one she met at Christmas and then jac was the one she was fake-marrying and then her and jac fall in love that way) but I still enjoyed this. much like most other romance books that have a mental health side plot, it was a little on the nose but I appreciate the message. the side characters were delightful and the love trapezoid was so slay. was a big fan of the grandmothers in particular however I was not happy with how easy it was for jac to sleep with her brothers fiance ππ she was like "I felt so badπππ" like um yes you should have. also tbh if I was the main character I would have held onto that cash and said bye to true love but that's just me π€·ββοΈ 4 stars
wow wow wow! I have now officially read all of mieko kawakami's translated works!! this is definitely my favourite! I don't even know how to describe what I feel for this book, it is definitely one of those "perfect for right now" books, I really related to the main character and some of the conversations they were having I was like π³π³π³ that me???? not really in a good way. mieko kawakami has definitely cemented herself as one of my favourite writers of all time! just the way she is able to construct such real characters and really dive into who they are and how they function in the world and in turn the questions she raises about ~society~ and how we interact with others... just wow I don't know what to say, much like with her other works, I will be thinking about this long into the future!!
oh no... it's mid I fear........... I really wanted to like this, I really did. and the beginning had me hooked!!! I was here for it!!! but guys π₯²π₯²π₯² idek it just fell off!!!! the riva siblings didn't feel like real siblings for starters and the whole thing with Nina's ending just felt forced? idk. also there were so many random side characters that ig were used to create a vibe but oml I DIDN'T CARE!! girl there was no need!!! like I'm not even kidding there were probably like 15 random side characters in which we get their pov or like the omniscience 3 person pov about them and then just describes them swinging from a chandelier or hooking up with someone famous like girl I'm confusedππ why is this hereππ I can't even explain what else I didn't like it was just aggressively mid and I'm upset with tjr ://// 2.25 stars
