One of my hallmarks for a book that doesn't know what it wants to do is multiple scenes of eating. I feel like probably about half this book is eating.  One of those books you can tell which part the author wrote first and tried to shape a whole book around.

There's quite a few books that have a a nesting doll narrative, but few that can pull it off. This one pulls it off.  With the pearl as t the center of the book holding the whole narrative together and the tug on the thread at the end to tie the disparate stories so tightly together as to blur the lines between them.  Gorgeous.
