This book rose quickly into my short list of favorite books and then firmly settled roots as the story went on. So many books recently have left me disappointed, or making excuses for them because something or someone is not quite right. A female character who is supposed to be strong suddenly acts like the damsel in distress or does something stupid or cruel just for the sake of tension or the plot. A male hero will be completely two-dimensional, as if men cannot be desirable unless they are perfectly fake. Or the plot lags and sags, jumping and lurching always to somewhere I expect.
HOWEVER, Midnight Thief is here to save you from the mind-numbing, teeth-gnashing mistakes of so many current fiction books. This book is perfect and then perfect again and then more perfect. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going to go next and thought 'Okay... here we go again...', I was utterly, happily surprised! This book does not go where you expect and at every moment the tension is high, the characters sincere, and the plot realistic! It's a miracle! The main character is a strong young woman with amazing abilities, but she's not 100% any one characteristic. Her good qualities have bad sides and her bad qualities have good sides and she genuinely strives to do the right thing, but is selfish too just like any of us would be. She's both incredibly admirable and completely real. And her story is even better than her characterization.
The plot is tight, fun, and heart-in-your-throat perfect. There was not a single moment where I thought 'I wish this had happened instead' nor a moment where the story set up for an awesome moment and failed to come through. The supporting characters are just as real and well-rounded as the main, including the secondary point-of-view character, whose voice and perspective was so perfectly rendered that even though he opposed the main character for much of the story, I found myself agreeing with him wholeheartedly every time I was looking at the story through his eyes. The story has adventure, intrigue, danger, and some impressive feats of acrobatic skill. There is also romance, but in a way that seems like real life, as would be expected from a 17-year-old girl trying to find her way in the world while also being interested in where she stands with the opposite sex. The romance is not a main focus of the story at all, but rather compels different aspects of the plot, as it should, as it would in the real world.
I could continue to gush about this book forever, but I think I ought to tell you to just go out and buy this book as soon as possible so that you can experience it for yourself! And to support the fantastic new author who wrote it, encouraging her to finish the next book as soon as possible!
