You should read this book for one very important reason: It has the best romance plotline of any YA book out there. The relationship between the two main characters is sweet and fun and tense. Their shifting points of view allow you to experience the thrill of both of them falling in love and see each through the other's eyes. It is poignant and real. Go out and get this book right now for this reason alone!

However, I think this story should have just been a fantasy romance. After a quick analysis, I am pretty sure the "main" plotline of the story, with the conspiracy and the investigation, was added after everything else was finished. It is clunky and confusing, where the rest of the story is smooth as liquid. This really bums me out, as I can almost hear someone in a workshop or publishing house saying, "We can't sell a book about gay love to teenagers. How about we make it an adventure fantasy instead?" This almost entirely ruined the book for me, but if you edit out all the parts about the conspiracy, it is vastly improved. Four stars for my headcannon of what this story should have been.

Thank you, Helen Russell! I needed that. How did you know??
