I read Cadaverous earlier this year and loved it, so I was eager to read this short story collection. Like any collection, it's a mixed bag, with some absolute standouts.

What a ride! Jenny wakes up to find herself in complete darkness with no memory of how she got there. There is nothing for her to do but try to figure out the dimensions of the place she's being held captive and reflect back on her life to figure out who she's being held by. This is a gripping psychological horror novel. I love reading about people's messy lives, and Jenny has quite a story to tell. 4.5 stars, rounded up.

This book was not for me. I found the writing to be kind of amateur, with stilted dialogue and so much over-explanation of things that were not relevant to the story at all. I actually DNF'd at 40%.

Tamara is a whole lot of fun! I vaguely remember seeing the movie it was based on when it came out, but I pretty much didn't remember anything going into the book. I do love a good revenge story, and this one is cheesy, gory fun!

This book just could not keep me interested. It's not bad, I just found myself dreading picking it up.

I really enjoyed this gothic tale of sisterhood at a home for unwed mothers in the 1940s. The relationships between the girls were very sweet. I wouldn't call this horror, it's more gothic historical fiction with light supernatural elements. It's a great palette cleanser between gorier or heavier reads, or for someone just getting into supernatural fiction.

A Red Winter in the West is the kind of book where, as I'm reading it, I'm thinking to myself, wow this book is really, really good. I wasn't overly familiar with horror westerns until I read the first book in the trilogy, The Massacre at Yellow Hill. This second book has solidified my love for this sub-genre. I'm eagerly awaiting the last book in the trilogy.

I feel that, in the hands of Troma or a similar indie bizarro horror film company, Unbortion would have been a silly, gory laugh riot that I would have loved. Instead, we get what felt to me like extremely heavy-handed pro-life propaganda.

I very much enjoyed the tale of Edith Penn and her thirteen cats. I especially enjoyed Rebecca's character arc. There are some genuinely creepy moments in the book and I'll be side-eyeing my own cat a bit harder now.
