Clanlands is a combination pop history/ showbiz memoir/ buddy comedy travelogue wherein Outlander costars Sam Heughan and Gavin McTavish pour out their love of their homeland, and each other. The patchwork nature of this book risks jarring tonal shifts, wherein we are reading about the desecration of the Highlander way of life one minute, and bemoaning a raging hangover the next; but the utter charm and likability of the narrators smooth over the tonal shifts easily enough. Heughan and McTavish sprinkle glimpses into life on the Outlander set throughout and contextualise the Outlander narrative and characters within broader Scottish history. I especially enjoyed insights into their personal history in live theatre. 🎭
🎧 I listened the audiobook, read by the authors, which I highly recommend - especially to readers for whom the Scottish accent is a novelty!
Clanlands is a diverting celebration of male friendship, and a beautiful region with a rich history.

Nope, though in a non-2021 year I would for sure be budgeting a recreational (or professional? 🤔) trip/move to Scotland after this fun armchair travel romp. I’ll have to settle for Heughan and McTavish’s road trip show Men in Kilts instead.
