Everything about this contemporary romance suggests I should have loved it, but for some reason it just wasn't hitting the spot for me. Did every character talk in the same pseudo-philosophical way? Certainly I had that impression from the heroine and her mother (which could make sense, of course). That shouldn't be enough to turn me off the entire book though, so I may try it again another time. 

Lorena Escoto Germán offers in Textured Teaching a challenge to educators to evolve our pedagogy. One of the central theses of Germán's work is that teaching is social justice work. Building on Culturally Sustaining Practice, Textured Teaching is a comprehensive but accessible guide to applying antiracism in the classroom.

For teachers who can do so, I recommend this book as a tool for school- or faculty-wide professional development. If you are in a school where this kind of corporate antiracism work is unlikely to occur, the next best thing is, of course, to work through the text yourself. Even beyond Textured Teaching's relevant and evidence-based content, its design is gorgeous, and I look forward to picking up a hardcopy for my desk!

Have you ever felt like you have a moral obligation to put a book into the hands of every person you know? This is how I feel about The School, a memoir of a year as an English teacher in an Australian public school. 🏫 

Brendan James Murray's memoir vibrates with an empathy that defies the simplistic and dehumanising targets and statistics that seem to dominate public and political conversations about our profession. Murray tells stories. Some of them are about the moment of clarity when a student clicks with a piece of literature, many of them are about the human connection that exists within every classroom. 

I wish I could hand this book to every non-teacher in Australia with an opinion about how teaching should work based entirely upon their own experience as a student years ago, and certainly to every education department corporate officer who refer to students as "clients".

Compulsively readable, SOME ACHIEVE GREATNESS is a fascinating insight into the career and leadership of John Bell, king of Australian theatre. 🎭  Bell's decades of experience producing innovate Shakespeare productions in Australia and running the Bell Shakespeare theatre company has informed his thoughtful ideas about what the Bard has to offer us about leadership for positive, productive creation and management. 

🍎 TO TEACH?
 Probably not to teach in class, but I believe all teachers could benefit from Bell's (and Shakespeare's) insights on positive collaboration and leadership. What are we if not leaders of our classrooms? If I could every one of my colleagues to read this book, I would.
