I made it a little over halfway through before I gave up. It's not that the book was bad -- it wasn't badly written at all, and there were several world building concepts that I thought were really interesting (like using old Fokkers and Sopwiths for fighting in the far future on alien worlds, due to the simplicity of manufacture, maintenance, and shipping). Unfortunately, it was a book about unpleasant people doing unpleasant things in unpleasant situations, and though I tried, I just couldn't get invested in any of the characters or situations. Not a bad book, just not a book for me.

Entertaining (though not great). Would have been three stars, but got docked one for its horrid three female supporting characters: one is basically an idiot doormat, one is a nagging wife, and one is essentially a lobotomized piece of eye candy with no will or higher brain function, whose primary mentions are descriptions of how much she's not wearing and lewd comments about what the men around her can do (and perhaps have done) with her. While the basic premise, though not horribly original, is at least presented in an amusing enough way, its treatment of women falls right in line with the worst clichés of modern gamer culture.

A clever idea, with a lot of good submissions for the anthology. The only downside is that it doesn't take long for each entry to feel like more of the same, partly due to the restrictions of the format, but also because many of the entries have extremely similar premises. Still, amusing enough.

As with the first, an absolutely mind-boggling amount of information and detail covering the creation of the second season of Star Trek's original series. If you're the kind of hardcore trek geek that might find this behind-the-scenes stuff interesting, these books are the top of the stack. Looking forward to the third volume when it's released.
