I actually have no intention of reading this one. I only picked it up because the title makes me laugh -- it's just so _mean_ -- and it was only a buck.

A really enjoyable collection of short horror, including two novellas and six short stories. Two of the entires are decidedly Lovecraftian ([a:Robert Lowndes|2940444|Robert Lowndes|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]' "The Abyss" and [a:C. Hall Thompson|2929774|C. Hall Thompson|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]'s "Spawn of the Green Abyss"), but my favorite is [a:John Steinbeck|585|John Steinbeck|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1182118389p2/585.jpg]'s "The Affair at 7 rue de M--", a wonderful little bit of dark humor about chewing gum that chews its owner, rather than the other way round.
After a laboratory explosion, a scientist is rescued and rebuilt by the enemy. When returned, his skull has been replaced by a featureless metal dome. Now his experiment is on hold as his superiors must try to determine if he's the man he claims to be or an impostor sent back as a spy. Ends up being a surprisingly engrossing look at identity, and how easy -- or difficult -- it can be to know who someone really is.
Very deserving of it's place on many "best of" lists. The Vietnam parallels are rather obvious, of course, and the underlying story has been told many times, but as another reviewer here said, sometimes it's the telling that's most important.
Excellent book. Something of a retelling of the old "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" idea, George Orr has discovered that he has what he calls 'effective' dreams that change the very nature of reality. Scared of the possibilities that this combination of power and lack of conscious control presents, he tries to find help through a psychiatrist, asking the shrink to find a way from prevent George's effective dreams. But when the psychiatrist starts trying to guide the dreams, the very nature of reality is in danger.
Nice "fill in the blanks" story explaining just what Nero was up to during the 25 years between his arrival in the new Trek universe and his encounter with Kirk and the gang. Includes some fun homages to the pre-existing Trek universe as well.
