I don’t love the “where you down” theme this author frequents. This story would’ve been much better told only from Remy’s pov, especially since Irene’s narrator wasn’t great (sounded like she was reading it off the page in real time). 

Pains me to say it, but I didn’t enjoy this one. The drama overshadowed the mystery and the humor. And barely any auntie shenanigans. I will continue on with the series though, when the next installment comes out. 

I was in it for the laughs and didn’t find them. Wasn’t for me but I hope others enjoy.  

 

That ending had me fighting the air!

Whoa! I was not expecting that to reel me in the way it did. Bravo! 

I don’t love speculative fiction that just swaps the haves for the have nots and they keep the same behaviors. There’s no imagination in that and it is reductive. 

Also, I thought this story was going in a completely different direction and I was incorrect lol. 

I appreciated the chapters about the author’s family life and upbringing. I had a hard time following the chapters about the run because I kept missing what was supposed to be good and spiritual for all the abuse, hazing, and hierarchy. I don’t think I took away what the author intended.
