I liked this one so much more than the second, maybe more than the first. The characters are just so vivid, as are the worlds they travel to. I’m a fan.
I wanted to like this book. I thought for SURE I would enjoy this book. I didn't. I hated it. I was SO DISTRACTED by the authors inconsistencies. One minute kid has duct tape around her mouth...10 minutes later (listened on audible) the kid is trying to put the *electrical* tape back on her mouth. Those are not the same kind of tape. Way to take me right out of the story.
Plus there's the inconsistencies in snowfall. I feel like this book was written by someone that's never actually experienced snowfall?? At one point they are wandering through waist deep snow (WHY?) but she sees that the "tracks" are half full from the last time someone walked through here...meaning like 12+" of snow. Meanwhile she gets to the parking lot and the snow is only "ankle deep" because it was "plowed 24hrs ago". THAT'S NOT HOW SNOW WORKS.
Plus there was trope after trope after trope.
1.5 stars...because I am feeling generous. The only reason I didn't DNF was so that I could write a review.

This was horribly boring for me. It was like...well I can't say what it was like because it would be a spoiler....but it's like another popular book but with more sci-fi and less romance. Not for me.
I adored this book. It was creepy and wonderfully written. Exactly my kind of book.
Another solid book for young kids. Full of science and wonder and magical creatures <3
2.5 stars. The kids enjoyed it but this just was not well done. So many throw away characters that you don't see again in any meaningful way. It had good bones, but it just was not fleshed out well. Good story, but no characters that you care about. Disappointed.
No. Just. No. I suppose if you don't pay much attention to anything other than what's directly around you...but this just read as some white lady whining about things. This isn't a unique experience. Religious extremism, prepper stuff, homeschooling as means of anti-gov't stuff. This isn't a strange or singular experience in the US. Didn't have a birth certificate! Oh golly, you don't say?! Father was worried about the Illuminati?? WOW! *sigh* Very disappointing.
This was...just awful. There was *one* point we agree upon, that we need less school. The rest read like an egotistical, fundamentalist, cynic...that had no place ever being a teacher, wrote this book. I am a homeschooler, we have homeschooled for 8 years now. School isn't a big boogeyman out to slowly take down every kid that shows individualist personality. What a dreadful, cynical book.
