It was a good book and had some great material for discussions but afraid my kids just didn't "get" it. *I* enjoyed it though.
Very interesting book. Not something I would have picked on my own, it was a loaner but very glad I read it.
3.5 stars. It was a bit simplistic and covered a huge span of time without a lot of signals to the reader (kids) that THAT much time has passed. One minute she's married the next she's 5 months from giving birth and the next she has had the baby. The kids were interested in what happened but it was lacking a bit for me, and I have read my fair share of kids' books. I need to look up kids chapter books written by actual natives instead of another white man.
3.5 stars. Interesting, readable, but no real character development and went from having GREAT potential to just being a notch less than mediocre.
4.5 stars. Absolutely fantastic. Engaging, interesting, meaningful. I am very glad to have found this book to read aloud to my kids. They learned a lot and it brought up a lot of wonderful discussion points for us.
What a wonderful book. I am incredibly impressed with this book as it effortlessly weaved in the lives of several different characters. All the characters were authentic and I could feel the change in "tone" through each of them. I never struggled to remember which perspective I was reading from, which happens sometimes with books set up this way. I recommend it to anyone.
The only thing that bothered me is that it was Christmas...and then it was April! I wanted more about the WINTER in Alaska! Otherwise, a very fun book that my children and I enjoyed.
4.5 stars. Wonderfully written and engaging book.
2.5 stars. It really didn't do it for me. I found it slow and...something. Too formulaic maybe? Lots of people love it, I am just not one of them.
