This was a wild ride. If you think you know where it's going, you don't. 

I made it about an hour into the audiobook and it became clear it was gonna just me some weirdly done torture porn and that's a no thank you from me.

I expected so much more after The Passage series. This felt like it should have been about 200 pages less than it was. It wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to my hopes at all.

So look, this isn't a BAD book. It's a perfectly good book. But it was described SO MANY times by SO MANY people as being like Circe and it just...isn't? It was very close to being a very good book but it just didn't live up to the hype for me. I wish I could explain it better, but alas, I can't figure out how to articulate how it fell short for me.

Why is there a mermaid in the forest? Who the fuck is Sampson? Why does this mermaid have her own plague doctor? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
