I would like more contemporary historical fiction pls. Full review to come!
This non-scary picture book is a cute addition to the world of Buffy. It’s the perfect way to introduce the next generation to a kickass character. The creative team even made The Gentlemen adorable! I loved the story and the art - highly recommend the the little (or big!) Buffy fan in your life!
Bree is so vibrant that she jumps off the page. On the Come Up is her coming-into-hip-hop (and of age) story, navigating the creation of her identity in the wake of her father’s fame (and death), her mother’s recovery, her school’s racist assumptions, and within her community. 10/10 would buy her album!
I thought this book was going to be along the lines of Female of the Species and Sadie, and it was. It was also its own story, different in the outcome than the other two. An interesting take on balancing vigilante justice, revenge, and real consequences.
Really cool way of showing how younger teens can engage in social justice (and how adults are always trying to tell them to be nice and also ignore their voices). Loved Shayla’s parents - encouraging her to use her voice.
If you could bottle women’s collective anger, frustration, sadness, and strength all in one, it would be this book.
I really love that Shuri got the credit over Tony for saving the world.
