First, best book title ever! Don't you want to use that in a conversation one day?
Anyway, I thought this was a bit less fun than the previous ones but that might be due to too much time in Georgia's self-absorbed head. This story feels a bit like filler with Georgia just feeling moody about Robbie/Sex God away in New Zealand until Masimo arrives in town. I also feel like there are way too many "osity" words and too many references to Hitler, Jesus, and Georgia's obsession with lesbians/who's gay or not.
Still, there are some fun moments! Georgia having to dance blindly to the bathroom because her false eyelashes have blinded her comes to mind.Ooh, Dave the Laugh is a hormone-driven mess, but I'm glad he threw hands at Mark.
"So, what did you do over Christmas break?
Oh, I was away laughing on a fast camel."

The writing's great, and I love the way Spanish and French words are weaved into the story.
Concerning the romance, I don't really see it for Lace and Cluck, their love I mean. :/ There were a lot of kiss scenes, but I didn't feel anything for them.
I suppose Cluck's my favorite character, but we got so little of his narrative. He's funny and the sad sack his family loves to kick around. Whoo, is it tough seeing his family treat him like Cinderella. HUGE Cluck SPOILER: this is some stuff straight from Maury. The grandpappy is the daddy!
On the other hand, Lace is kind of bland after she falls in love. It's surprising but I enjoyed reading about her applying make-up. Now, I liked Lace's dad. That's a guy with his own motivations who thinks with his own mind. To be honest, I didn't care about anybody else besides Cluck and Lace's dad.
Overall, not bad at all but I also wanted it to be over. Why? I don't like long drawn out misunderstandings, but anyone else should enjoy some of the plot twists this book brings. So, it's 2 stars for my enjoyment but a 3 for the story.

Yeah, some of the stereotypes feel very in your face. But sweet Monty and his friendship with Patrice will always win. Also, Monty said STREET JUSTICE!]
[8/8/23 Read this again after so long.
I can acknowledge it’s not flawless as it has some stereotypes and stilted dialogue, but it still holds so much charm. Spirited Away meets The Proud Family. Monty is literally the best, and I still love sweet, little Patrice. One of my favorite books.]
I have read this book exactly 12 times (it will probably be 13 soon). I didn't know I could fall in love with a book. I connected so much with Patrice's personality as if she were a mirror image of me (minus the shy part). Patrice was an adorable character (soft-spoken, intelligent, and sweet), but Monty was a gem or better said—a guardian angel. I often joke that everyone in life needs a Monty. Someone that unconditionally supports you and wants the best for you!

"I told myself that the next time I saw something beautiful trying to survive in the middle of trash I'd do what I could to protect it, to make sure it grew and that nobody messed it up. So, I guess you're my flower."—Monty (pg 129)
I bought Standing Against the Wind a few years ago, so I could reread it at my leisure, and though I know how the story ends I still have the same heartwarming feelings every time I read it. The innocent preteen romance, Monty, and Patrice's development keep me coming back for more. Yes, in the background, Patrice lives in a rough neighborhood, has absentee parents (dad's a deadbeat; mom's in jail), feels so grateful to her aunt that she takes cares of the whole family on her shoulders and narrowly escapes a sexual assault.
But even with all those realistic and heavy things, the story is light-hearted. It's not one of those all-consuming, depressing "get out the hood stories". Yes, Patrice does want to leave but the focus is on her intelligence and resourcefulness to win a scholarship to a black academy.
Overall, it's a bit hard for me to express why I enjoyed this book so much without just gushing out rainbows. I really need this to be made into a live-action movie or better yet an animated movie ( I always get a Ghibli vibe from this).
A bit strange, but I found something endearing about the story. I think this is a standalone, but it raises a lot of questions. Were the animals turned into anthropomorphic creatures after the apocalypse? I mean Simon reenacts a game of fetch and remembers his owner calling him a 'good boy.' Where'd all the humans go? What caused this dystopian type of setting?
Overall, I enjoyed the artwork and the color direction. The survival setting is very sad and dark but interesting. I'm not sure how I was supposed to feel about the Barnaby conflict. It just felt so open-ended. Still, I recommend it.
