This book at times was really simple. And I mean predicting the whole ending simple. BUT that is what it was meant to be, and it was great.

It was fluffy, swoon worthy, the right bit of drama that didn’t put you on edge the entire book. It was a great, fun read.

I think that the spice level in this book is a bit much, so much so that it completely dominates the plot in a way that, if it was taken out, I think the book would only be a a quarter of the size. Which, if you’re into that, great! However for me I think I’m looking for a little bit more plot progression than it gave.

I also have to admit I am slightly uncomfortable with the infantilization of the FMC. There were a few times that I was even questioning if this girl was an adult, and given the spice level…. Definitely a little weird

I really loved the romance in this book, however **SPOILERS**

The amnesia at the end totally ruined it for me. I feel as if it was completely unnecessary and threw away all of the relationship growth. I truly cannot understand why people ever think this trope is a good idea.

I wanted to rate this lower because of the way my heart was clenching for the first half, but after letting my emotions FINALLY settle I realized that other than having the intended reactions to Sorin and Scarlett I have literally no notes.

I am so disappointed I'm not going to be able to jump into book three this very minute because I am just trying to chase a happy ending damnit!

The characters are just so real that I can't help but actually feel what they are feeling. The longer I read these stops being just names on a page and turn into people with a life of their own, and the true magic I feel reading is absolutely unparalleled. I am so exited to learn more about, well, everything! It seems as if as soon as you think you have a grasp on reality, the rug gets pulled out from under you. It is as maddening as it is delightful.

I entered Melissa's universe with the Legacy series, and absolutely fell in love with her writing and her ability to just completely pull you in with the world building and dialogue. After finishing that and having to wait for the fourth book I figured that I had to read this series and oh my gosh.

This was a book that, once I got into, I could not put down. upon opening I was reminded of all the reasons I love Melissa's writing. The tensions were high, I was invested in literally every character and their outcome, I felt my emotions being pulled along right beside the characters. I truly believe that she does not just write stories, she writes experiences.

I am incredibly excited to keep moving through this series!

I have… interesting feelings about this book.

I think that the premise was very interesting, but I think it actually could have benefitted by being a bit longer. The magical families to me never felt properly explained, and the treatment of Mercy didn’t really click for me, even with what we found out in the end.

I think that the writing was all very surface, lacing some confusion with how the magic works. We never understood the depths of the characters, just the obvious emotions that would rise from whatever situation, and I would have loved to have better understood how Mercy’s family came to accept her rather than it just spontaneously happening in the name of family.

I think mercy’s character also would have benefited from us watching her come into her power and the conflicting emotions. Not just her using it for grocery’s.

Last- and honestly the most important (spoilers ahead!!!)

. I’m not a fan of unplanned pregnancy and it is something that can just completely turn me off of a book. That pregnancy truly came out of nowhere and after reading the plot of the next one, I’m not really sure I’m a fan of this pregnancy now taking center stage. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just not what I’m into.

I don’t think I’m going to continue with the series. It doesn’t have world building at the level I enjoy and it seems to be focusing on topics that are not intriguing to me. It wasn’t a horrible read by any means! There was just too much lacking for me to feel any loyalty to it.

DID NOT FINISH: 38%

I got about 40% through, and you know what, it was good!  I was having a few issues though. I tend to like fantasy, and even with contemporary dark romance, it’s a bit more fantastical. This was honestly just too real. A total testament to the writing, but I just honestly couldn’t take the stress. What really solidified the DNF though was that I found out about the plot twist and the third act break up, and I am honestly not at the point of my life where I can handle that level of stress for a relationship that’s not my own. Maybe I’ll come back to it someday?

I love this book! I’m coming back to reread before I finish the series, and it was just as captivating as the first time.

I love the pace of it, and I found the characters to be pretty engaging. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is because it feels like this book is holding back, which is something I would expect the first book of a series to do, but I am very exciting to read on and discover this series’ full potential!
