Today's episode of Why Would You Write That? The FMC has made sure that her older, absuive brother has never been around, much less met their 4-year-old baby sister that she is the primary caregiver for. This man physically assaulted her their entire childhood, evne at one point breaking her arm. The MMC inexplicably starts a relationship with this brother fully knowing their history and claiming to care about the FMC. We get to the climax of this on page 256 where the MMC has allowed the abusive brother to meet the baby sister - and even let her alone with him! Without the FMC's consent! The FMC has a poor reaction, as one would, and the MMC tells her to stop freaking out. She tells him - you cannot have a relationship with me or my baby sister so long as abusive brother is in your life. MMC says nah I'm not gonna do that. We shaboinged, it's no longer your decision. We don't care about abuse victims apparently as much as we care about giving people who've shown you exactly who they are second chances.
Do we know what romance is? I am concerned we do not. This is not how you treat someone you love and care about. Why would you write this???
Also their are some interesting discussions of class and by interesting I mean that most poor people are inherently bad unless they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

First attempt at a Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
Points for angst. So much angst. I’m going to try some others, I just couldn’t get into this one. Everyone hates the FMC SO MUCH it’s beginning to come off as conflict for conflict’s sake.

Bodyguard romance is my personal kryptonite. Alas, I also went through a pageant phase in the Miss America circuit. I have no idea where all of these pageant rules & regs are coming from, so we are kicking this off with serious plausibility issues. Add on the fact that our heroine is ~not like other pageant girls~ she’s only doing it to shout out her friend’s business?!?!?! How cringy would it be for her to be sincere about competing? Ew gross. Being genuine is so cringe.
Anyways it’s a hard pass.
DNF early and DNF often, kids.

This book starts off with a truly cringey gal pal gossip sesh where everyone talks about how weird it was for a guy on a dating app to ask one of the characters to peg him . . . Yeeaaahhhh soooo weird. WHO WOULD BE INTO THAT.
😅
I fear I am not the target audience for this book.

There were a lot of bad things about this book, but by far the biggest offender was the astoundingly bad dialogue. Ya feel me, Kristen Ashley? Do you feel me? Do you feel me do you feel me.
Also referencing Sons of Anarchy in your MC romance is nearly as cringey as referencing 50 Shades of Gray in any romance novel involving BDSM.
