I wanted more from this - the whole story revolves around one character's perspective, the plot is so slow it's almost barely there, it's quite repetitive, and the central theme never really evolved for me. I kept reading thinking it would ramp up but it never really revealed itself. I did like the writing and thought the characters were interesting, 3.5⭐maybe??

I kinda read this in preparation for The Books of Jacob by the same author, so I'm hoping this halfway prepared me and will be better

This has everything that Are You Listening? had for me at an even longer page count (which I loved!!) But lacked the one more emotional tie in that made Are You Listening? perfect... Without spoiling it was the lack of a great emotional punch I felt could've happened in the third act of the story. I loved living in their world and seeing the characters unfold, the art was sprawling and beautiful and created a little universe of its own... Found family trope will remain superior
