I read this book for the first time over 10 years ago and decided to reread to be ready for the movie next month! Honestly, I forgot almost everything about this book and the things I thought I remembered I very much did not
3.5 stars rounded up! This was nothing like I expected going in and it was both in good ways and bad ways. Full review to come!
3.5 stars
I absolutely LOVE Heartstopper so I’ve been meaning to read Solitaire for awhile and I was finally able to get to it! While overall, I liked it, it took me so long to actually be able to get into it

This book was so interesting and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I saw a book trailer for this a few weeks ago and I was super intrigued and I’m really glad that I picked it up! I listened to the audiobook of this one and the narrator really added to the story and portrayed the characters so well! White Smoke was way more than a “haunted house” story, the background of the town and the sinister things going on right underneath everyone’s noses was so well plotted and honestly the author just weaved everything together so well. I also really enjoyed the mental health aspect of the book! There were a few things that I wish would’ve been expanded on at the end. Honestly when the audiobook ended, I was kind of confused why there wasn’t more. Besides the ending being a bit abrupt and wanting more of a few things, I really enjoyed this book and I honestly think it would make a great movie one day!
I really enjoyed this book! The basic storyline was pretty predictable and Chuck frustrated me at times just from her impulsive non thinking that got her into bad situations but overall I really loved it! I bought this book as soon as I heard about it because my first thought when I read the synopsis was “omg this is the DCOM Ally Cats Strike but with the friends to enemies to friends to lovers trope!” And that was very much what it was just with really great mental health rep added in!

I adored everything from the setting in San Francisco to the side characters to the tension between Chuck & Beckett to the bowling and everything in between! Beckett was so soft and lovable and brought out the best in Chuck! I think it was really fitting that San Francisco was almost a character in itself in this story. The city is so important to Chuck and the way Amelia describes it really painted a picture of how special it is to her! As someone that’s never been there, I felt like I was transported there the whole time!

I think the most important aspect of this book was the mental health rep! Without giving away spoilers, a big part of Chucks journey throughout the book is that she’s terrified of turning out like her mom who had bipolar disorder and lost her life to suicide when Chuck was a toddler. Mental health in general has a terrible stigma but bipolar disorder is one of the worst. Most people just see it as the mania and that’s why people with this illnesses are dismissed as “crazy” but just like everything else there’s so much more to it and it’s a spectrum that most people don’t understand. I believe Chucks journey throughout the book can help a lot of people understand what bipolar disorder is really like and help people (young people especially) become more comfortable with who they are.

I loved this book so much!! I’ve had it on my tbr for years and just never got around to finally picking it up until now and I have no idea why I waited so long!! This book has everything I love; fandoms, mental health rep, adorable romance, and so much more! There were a few things towards the end that I didn’t love so my rating is more of a 4.75 but the way it was wrapped up at the very end, made the whole rollercoaster worth it and I’m just rounding it up to a 5! I listened to the audiobook of this one and loved the narrators. I didn’t want to stop listening the entire time and picked it back up every chance I got! This will definitely be on my recommended list from now on!
