could this get anymore boring.....???!!! this entire book suffers from "they didn't show us, they told us." which is a terrible way of storytelling, in my opinion.

i couldn't get into this at all. every paragraph was a long, monotonous, repetitive, back and forth of "he did this. he said this. oh i hated him. i was thirsty. i was so ashamed. oh slaves." god shut the fuck up.

i almost want to give this 4 stars only because the personality of olivia and her daughters are all the same? i don't think the author did a very good job at making them different, and even when reading their pov's, they all felt the same. which made them feel a little pointless and even redundant at times. however, i did really enjoy the story, the atmosphere the most. bleak, eerie, dark; hopeless at times. a near perfect read.

i honest to god though i was reading a YA novel when i started this. i had to go back to see if i had mistaken it for an adult horror book. every character is annoying as hell and so far the only backstory i really cared about the character from thailand. if i can possibly find an audiobook version of this, i may pick it back up and finish but there's no way i'm reading this on my own. i refuse.

pretty writing. i like how it was written like a screenplay. not really sure what was going on, though.

I didn't like this as much as I did "The Four Winds", (I literally sobbed at the end of that one, whereas this one made me angry and emotional, but not drawn to tears), but once again, Kristin Hannah's writing is so stunning and poetic and moving. 5 stars again and again.

Fun. Kind of predictable. The writing was okay, but entertaining enough. I loved the setting, which is what kept me reading as intently as I was!
