I hate contemporary references in books with a passion but this one isn't that bad.
My only issue is Jayne is constantly said to be an emotional character but reading through I can barely get a sense of her thought process. She does things / takes actions at random,
I guess my other issue is misused AAVE. But also... Asian American? From Texas? New York transplants? Color me shocked.

Does a little too much for a book that's way too short. Despite this its very fun. Would I reread it? No. But I did have fun!

It's beautiful. You can feel where she wanted to go with this book, and the fact that where she wanted to go ended up changing as she wrote, and in Miss Morrison fashion the end is just as marvellous as her other work. I won't put spoilers but there are so many elements in this book that blend together so well, so wonderful, so black and beautiful...
The alternate name for the book War would not have been so fitting as the title of Paradise. The idea of paradise inherently comes with complication and the town of Ruby embodies that. The plights of the characters, even the climax and the ending. So black and beautiful. Miss Morrison girl, you did it again.

I appreciate that of all three books, Ezeulu was less of a coward than Obi and Okonkwo. That was at least tolerable.

The Plays of Georgia Douglas Johnson: From the New Negro Renaissance to the Civil Rights Movement
Georgia Douglas Johnson, Judith L. Stephens
That all being said... The plays aren't very good. In my opinion! The plots of most if not all of them feel like there's something missing, as if she wrote all the peak moments in a story and these plays are the bits of aftermath, like a One Day Later recap. Another dig is the plays feel like something my high school English teacher would've wrote because she wrote the plays herself I'm assuming because they didn't allow our small 500-student school to do regular high school plays like Romeo & Juliet or whatever.
