Fuck I wish I wasn't an only child.

I hate contemporary references in books with a passion but this one isn't that bad.

My only issue is Jayne is constantly said to be an emotional character but reading through I can barely get a sense of her thought process. She does things / takes actions at random,
for example: kicking out jeremy, going with june to the doctor,
and there was no build up or explanation as to why she decided to do those things. Actually it didn't have to be explained, but those moments felt random from a character whose thoughts we're exclusively able to read. Makes the character feel plot-driven as opposed to character-driven, but the story as a whole doesn't feel the same.

I guess my other issue is misused AAVE. But also... Asian American? From Texas? New York transplants? Color me shocked.

Significantly less slurs in this one. I mean, they're there, but less so than the first. Thank goodness.
Now, why would she kiss him if they're siblings at the end? I don't like kids kissing in media and I especially don't like incest. Especially for a girl who's heavily implied to be a victim of childhood sexual assault?! Come on now.
Other than that, the book's not that bad.

XX: Poems for the Twentieth Century

Campbell McGrath

DID NOT FINISH: 23%

I misunderstood what the book was. I thought it was a collection of poetry written by people who lived during the era. That being said, it's still very white. Picasso is brought up at least 20 times? Ew. I made a vow that I'd read every book I picked up from the library but through the first pages I noticed all the poems had the same voice, that's when I realized my mistake, and them I thought I really don't have to stick to that rule. If I feel like it's a waste of time, I can put it down.

Save a horse, ride a lesbian!

Does a little too much for a book that's way too short. Despite this its very fun. Would I reread it? No. But I did have fun!

I keep finding myself speechless after reading Toni Morrison, so instead of saying "Girl, you did it again," I'll try to leave a proper review this time.

It's beautiful. You can feel where she wanted to go with this book, and the fact that where she wanted to go ended up changing as she wrote, and in Miss Morrison fashion the end is just as marvellous as her other work. I won't put spoilers but there are so many elements in this book that blend together so well, so wonderful, so black and beautiful...

The alternate name for the book War would not have been so fitting as the title of Paradise. The idea of paradise inherently comes with complication and the town of Ruby embodies that. The plights of the characters, even the climax and the ending. So black and beautiful. Miss Morrison girl, you did it again.

Ugh. What a drag. I think I hate classics.

I appreciate that of all three books, Ezeulu was less of a coward than Obi and Okonkwo. That was at least tolerable.

I'd like to propose the opposite of Betteridge's law of headlines: Angela Y. Davis' law of book titles, which states that if a book asks the reader a question than answer as probably yes.

I may be biased because I'm a cinema major, but none of the plays really feel like they're made for stage. Like, what do you mean characters wait on stage for "a few minutes" for the sound of a train? Huh??? Just... dead air until someone presses the button to make a train sound? No way. Someone go back in time and get Mrs. Douglas Camp Johnson a camera so she can make short films.

That all being said... The plays aren't very good. In my opinion! The plots of most if not all of them feel like there's something missing, as if she wrote all the peak moments in a story and these plays are the bits of aftermath, like a One Day Later recap. Another dig is the plays feel like something my high school English teacher would've wrote because she wrote the plays herself I'm assuming because they didn't allow our small 500-student school to do regular high school plays like Romeo & Juliet or whatever.
No play really stood out to me except the accidental incest one, because girl what the fuck? The one that's supposed to be like Romeo & Juliet except it was way too short and I didn't see any of it coming so it made me laugh because it felt absurd, and the one I think called Black Boy Blue Eyes? Where the boy about to be lynched gets saved by the judge who's implied to be his dad? All the ones with prominent mixed race characters. Wow.
I'm still very interested in reading her poetry.

I have the exact same opinion as I have for the 1975 film: Great, amazing, even almost perfect, but only 4 stars because the 5th star would've been if it was lesbian. Don't get me started on that 2004 travesty.
