Read for my Alphabet challenge. Not my cup of tea. I didn't hate the book, but I did dislike it. First of all, trigger warning British. Second, cops. Ew. Third,
there are so many moments that are like... only a straight person could've wrote this. Like. Contacting your stalker for help with a criminal case when he could be a suspect and her little speech of advice for him at the end. Just a bad message for people with real stalkers like if you're nice enough to them, maybe this time when you tell them no, even though you actively invited them in your life and asked for their help, this time when you tell them to seek help they'll actually do it! If you're nice enough!
So ew.

The writing is nice. It held my attention so points for that. But negative points for so many things I wrote in my journal entries. Oh boy. Again, this genre isn't my cup of tea. I always assumed it but at least I gave it a chance and now I know for sure. Also I guessed the twist not even a quarter of the way in so I'm gonna assume that's just a staple for crime / thriller type books.

My second book ever giving 5 stars! (I think it's like a 4.95 because I'm naturally a lil judgey but it's worth the round up!!!)

How do I explain this book other than using the word juicy?

This book is so perfect. It's beautiful it's vibrant it's juicy. It's my first real delve into fantasy / sci-fi, and it's the longest I've ever taken reading one book with such a low page count, but my goodness my god my unity!, what a lovely story! I literally had something to say for almost every other page. I have 136 journal entries logged. Every twist and every turn, I gasped! I gusped! I creamed! I screamed! I jumped! Elly Bangs the woman that you are...!

💛💚💙👁💙💚💛

These people are literally, as I'm sure others have said, so normal. I don't mean that derogatorily. I really enjoyed the book. I like slice of life even though I don't read or watch it as much as I should. Not as much attention is put into this genre even though it's just as important as any other.

My only issues are with the way it was written. That's more of a personal thing though. I find dialogue to be the most important part of a piece of media involving two or more people and in this book there are no quotation marks. The writing is very, very good, so the issue was when it flipped from being internal and external. Although I'm sure that was intentional. My other issue is I didn't like how their stories went. But that's another personal thing! If only they knew how to just talk to each other! Even still I think they're the kind of people who will get married in the future whether or not they work on themselves. They're it for each other. I like that, but I wish they were healthier!

Beautiful flowery language. Perfectly in theme. So much care and respect and love for the culture. The cultures! Straight people who deserve rights for once! I try not to gush in these reviews but this book is just as lovely and wonderful as the movie, however the book is a lot better! It's aware of the movie's flaws and acknowledges them while still telling a seamless smooth story. It still manages to be Disney, which is only a bad thing for a few chapters
(When Tiana runs from Roselande. What a Disney sitcom-y, trying to stretch the story a little bit more so the episode can be a round 22 minutes kind of move.)
, but doesn't shy away from or cover up truths. Love love love. I love it here. So happy.

What war was her dad fighting in? Because it wasn't WW1. He died in 1921 in Belgrade, Serbia. What the hell was he doing in Serbia in 1921? The best I could find was the Russian Civil War??? I'm sure it was to establush that he was in her life for much longer than the movie showed but that was my one major inconsistency. Unless this is a different timeline where WW1 happened later?

Bored white soccer mom being a little too nosy. If you like constant repetition, mediocre writing, and a very slow almost glacial pace for 85% of the book and then the speed of a rocket launch at the end, you might like this book.

Years ago I saw this book in an article that I don't remember the name of, just some list of books to read, don't remember what website either but it was probably some shit like Buzzfeed. If I find what the news source was I swear to the Gods I am NEVER reading an article by them again.

I can't even say it's painfully white more like it's absurdly white. Like I know white people are a different breed but of all the sectors and factons of white folks I've seen I have never encountered this sort of oddity. An absolute strangness. I mean this with the utmost seriousness when I say weirdo behavior.

The writing also isn't all that exciting or riveting. It reads like a debut novel for sure. It didn't grip my attention for very long. The best parts were the gay parts and even those were off.

If you like unreloable narrators (derogatory) and toxic whiteness (EXTREMELY derogatory), this book is for you.

Heartbreaking in a way that makes you smile? Or maybe I'm just a little skewed. It's so real. The beauty of the writing style alone hooked me but the story? Too real.
There's a paragraph where mom is thinking about Lydia and how she can mold her future and everything her daughter is going to be that she couldn't and in the middle Hannah is mentioned, as mom is pregnant, and so quickly is she forgotten. She is sandwiched between Marilyn and Lydia, in story and in sentence, just barely acknowledged, but nothing more. That's only ONE example of the writing that had me hooked much earlier than that scene.
So painful. And despite everything that happens the family loves each other so much, in a bad, terrible, abusive and abused way, but as the title shows, none of them know how to tell each other that. None of them know how to be better to each other, but they all want to. I fucking love it.

I love when teens sleuth. The ending was too quick unfortunately. Much to be explored.
I thought the killer's motivation was misogyny. After Rodrigo explained he wasn't a misogynist any more, I figured that was where the plot was going. But the killer's thing being he didn't want people to leave town is easier to sympathize with. Not valid, just kind of understandable.

Pretty cute. Very sweet most the time. Unfortunately, the story is pretty forgettable. Maybe that's ironic.
I didn't like her decision to get back with her husband. Just seemed regressive. But hey, what do I know about the minds of heterosexuals?
If it becomes a movie, though, I will be watching from the comfort of my couch.
