A 2013 staff fiction favorite recommended by Stephen.

His review: Critics are calling THE SON an “epic” American novel and I would agree. A multi-generational story of the McCullough family in Texas from the time Eli was kidnapped by Comanches in 1849 through his sons and his great-granddaughter to 2012. If you like Larry McMurty’s western novels you will like Eli’s story and if you like Cormac McCarthy’s writings you will like the tales of his sons and great-granddaughter. Meyer is a writer who gives you a sense of time and place with details and descriptions that put you there. The family trials and tribulations mirror the growth of the West and of America itself. A great read.

Connie's review: I agree with other reviewers that Red Hook and its inhabitants are intriquing and the mystery takes a back seat. The actions of the characters kept me turning the pages though.

A 2013 staff fiction favorite recommended by Connie and Ellen J.

Connie's review: Cath and Wren are twins and freshmen in college. Cath has to figure out how to be her own person and not a "twin" since Wren wants to separate herself and live in a different dorm. Cath is a great character, genuine and unique. I also loved the fan-fiction theme which gives Cath a world to escape to when she feels like an outsider.

George Saunders is such an amazing writer. It's so incredible how much of an impact his stories can have given how short they are. I like to think of him as a blend between Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut.
