I initially picked this book up because Gruen is a local author and it had received consistently solid reviews. Once I did, I could not put it down. Jacob Jankowski is a relatable and likeable character at every stage of life, and his adaptation to circus life is at once fascinating and heartbreaking. Gruen draws her story with the perfect amount of restraint and attention to detail resulting in a quick moving story depicting the realities of Depression era survival.

A wonderfully complex main character makes this murder mystery a psychological study as well while she helps investigate a decades-old family secret and stumbles into a larger and more cynical series of deaths.

Set in the author's native Sweden, this book kept me glued to my mp3 player and anxiously awaiting for the next installment which will be published in the U.S. at the end of July.

One of my new favorite authors--too bad he recently died after writing the third book in this series.

(I re-read this for a book discussion and found it to be even better the second time. Brilliantly plotted!

Characters you care about, flaws and all, because they are completely real. It's so interesting to watch people grow and develop and mature and backslide and get back on track. The story ends on such a complete note. There's nothing more to be said; these folks don't need the author or reader any longer to move their lives along. They'll get along just fine without us. One of the best books I've read.
